I ended up buying a used TC Prohunter Muzzleloader for my daughter that came with a 2nd barrel...a 28" SS 300 Win Mag.

I have my own TC Prohunter with multiple barrels and while I do not need and I wasn't looking to buy a 300 Win Mag I now have one. So I will likely keep it versus sell it (more toys).

So with that as background, when I start playing with ammo and bullet weights what is the bullet weight that the 300 Win Mag was more or less intended to shoot? I am guessing 180 gr but would appreciate any comments with a short rationale. Thanks.

Depends on what you want it to do. I'm between 165-180 with my WM(s), accubonds, of course, save <150gr for the wsm.

150 on the low end for velocity for flatter shooting st short ranges
180 is a good balance
210 on the high end for bc for longer range

Intended use would be for hunting.....and probably not out past 350-400 yards (hopefully less). So looking for a bullet weight that would be accurate. I know you need to experiment...just looking for some guidelines.

It's hard to beat a 180 grain bullet for hunting in the 300 WM. A Nosler Accubond, Hornady Interbond or SST are really good choices.

Guys...thanks.

I think I'll start with the 180 gr and see how they shoot out of the barrel. If that works well I may just stop there based on how frequently I will likely use that particular barrel.

I would go with 165-8 for penetration and a flatter trajectory.

It was designed for 165-180 grain (that doesn't mean other weights won't do fine). I like 180 grain for my .300s, so that's what I use. I wouldn't hesitate to use a little lighter bullet though, especially in one of the monometals.

A Barnes x bullet 165 is about the same as a 180 lead bullet.
On a light weight 300 you need to shoot the lightest weight that will group well.
My point is to use the lightest bullet you can to keep from punishing your shoulder.
A Barnes x bullet 150 is about the same as a 150 lead bullet.
Think about it and borrow some 180gr and compare it to a 150 grain!! rifle

BigDog,
I appreciate the advice and do not like getting beat up if I do not have to. That said, I am not very concerned about recoil. The ProHunter Flex Tech stock really is amazing when it comes to reducing the felt recoil. I have my 5ft daughter using my 50 cal muzzleloader with 150 gr of WhiteHots and a 250 gr Barnes tipped expander...no issues. I am a big fan of that stock design.

My Tc contender is pretty lite. I I have had a rotator cuff rebuild and didn't think I could shoot a magnum again .
With said I am taking care of my shoulder. It has taken 3 years to fully heal. Now my 300 wsm has a Knox Blackhawk stock and no recoil. I paid a toll from years of abuse l hope someone can learn from my mistakes.
