If this has been covered before, I apologize. Did a search and didn't find anything. I was taught that you don't pee near your deer stand. (Spent many an uncomfortable hour, adhering to that policy ) Recently, I have had several experienced hunters argue that it doesn't matter ,in fact deer pay no attention to human urine. I'd love to hear your opinions and experiences.

Urinating does not effect the deer what so ever. That is one of those wifes tales that doesn't hold up. Now if you were to defecate that would be another story.

I just took a leak and was getting back into the stand when I saw the biggest buck I ever killed. Don't guess he had time to smell it yet. Used to carry a plastic bottle, got tired of messing with it. MIght could see the difference bow hunting, not with a gun though.

I have never worried about it. I just let it fly. If anything it may be beneficial. When a buck smells urine they like to investigate. By the time they get close enough to determine that it's not a hot doe it will be too late.

My take is that urinating near your deer stand may help or it may hurt. It all depends on the frame of mind the deer are in. Deer cannot distinguish between deer urine or human urine or dog urine or cat urine or any other type of animal for that matter. Urine is urine, regardless of where it comes from. IMO, here's where all the doe urine or fox urine or coon urine or dominant buck urine producers are making such a fortune off hunters with such a scam. All urine is about 96% water and about 4% urea which is a toxic byproduct of amino acid metabolism. The ammonia smells that were all so familiar with is produced as bacteria breaks down the urea. This process begins very quickly, and in a short period of time, urine has become nothing more than ammonia producing bacteria.
So, deer will certainly smell the urine, and they’ll know something has urinated, but whether it will spook them or not all depends on how skittish they are at the time. The smell will certainly alert them to the fact that something is in the area. They will not know if it’s another buck, and doe, or anything else without investigating it further, but they’ll know something is near.

Same here but now I go whenever the urge hits me and is has absolutely no effect on the deer that I can see. I read a study on the net somewhere a year or so back about a guy who tested the theory. He made mock scrapes using doe urine, buck urine and human urine and set up game cams on each one to record visits to the scrape. He said the one made with human urine actually got the most action.

Ever heard someone tell a story how they just finished taking a whiz and then had a big mature buck charge into bow range to check out the source? Me neither!
IMO, younger deer may not be bothered by human urine, but mature bucks will avoid it.

Why chance it where you hunt? Try it somewhere else, do it at a scrape and see but where you hunt??? I don't, too easy to carry a plastic zip lock bag, BTW take gallon size.

So do you pack that out, carry it in a backpack, or dump it around your buddies feeder? Man if that fell while being filled, nasty!
I just step outside and stretch the legs or take a gatorade bottle.

I say unleash the beast and set it free. Personally though, I go in a Gatorade bottle so I don't have to stand up and bring attention to myself.

I have known hunters who peed on any scrape they saw, believing it would bring the bucks back more often. I have no idea.

HWY_MAN: Or even better, you COULD just carry your filled zip-lock bag around and dribble a little around everyone else's stand.

I use an absorbent product designed for oil/chemical spills in my zip-lock bag. That stuff absorbs 100 times it's own weight. Easier to pack out and cheap for me.
