If this has been covered before, I apologize. Did a search and didn't find anything.

I was taught that you don't pee near your deer stand. (Spent many an uncomfortable hour, adhering to that policy ) Recently, I have had several experienced hunters argue that it doesn't matter ,in fact deer pay no attention to human urine.

I'd love to hear your opinions and experiences.

Urinating does not effect the deer what so ever. That is one of those wifes tales that doesn't hold up. Now if you were to defecate that would be another story.

I just took a leak and was getting back into the stand when I saw the biggest buck I ever killed. Don't guess he had time to smell it yet. Used to carry a plastic bottle, got tired of messing with it. MIght could see the difference bow hunting, not with a gun though.

I have never worried about it. I just let it fly. If anything it may be beneficial. When a buck smells urine they like to investigate. By the time they get close enough to determine that it's not a hot doe it will be too late.

My take is that urinating near your deer stand may help or it may hurt. It all depends on the frame of mind the deer are in. Deer cannot distinguish between deer urine or human urine or dog urine or cat urine or any other type of animal for that matter. Urine is urine, regardless of where it comes from. IMO, here's where all the doe urine or fox urine or coon urine or dominant buck urine producers are making such a fortune off hunters with such a scam. All urine is about 96% water and about 4% urea which is a toxic byproduct of amino acid metabolism. The ammonia smells that were all so familiar with is produced as bacteria breaks down the urea. This process begins very quickly, and in a short period of time, urine has become nothing more than ammonia producing bacteria.

So, deer will certainly smell the urine, and they’ll know something has urinated, but whether it will spook them or not all depends on how skittish they are at the time. The smell will certainly alert them to the fact that something is in the area. They will not know if it’s another buck, and doe, or anything else without investigating it further, but they’ll know something is near.

Same here but now I go whenever the urge hits me and is has absolutely no effect on the deer that I can see. I read a study on the net somewhere a year or so back about a guy who tested the theory. He made mock scrapes using doe urine, buck urine and human urine and set up game cams on each one to record visits to the scrape. He said the one made with human urine actually got the most action.

Ever heard someone tell a story how they just finished taking a whiz and then had a big mature buck charge into bow range to check out the source? Me neither!

IMO, younger deer may not be bothered by human urine, but mature bucks will avoid it.

Why chance it where you hunt? Try it somewhere else, do it at a scrape and see but where you hunt??? I don't, too easy to carry a plastic zip lock bag, BTW take gallon size.

So do you pack that out, carry it in a backpack, or dump it around your buddies feeder? Man if that fell while being filled, nasty!

I just step outside and stretch the legs or take a gatorade bottle.

I say unleash the beast and set it free.

Personally though, I go in a Gatorade bottle so I don't have to stand up and bring attention to myself.

I have known hunters who peed on any scrape they saw, believing it would bring the bucks back more often. I have no idea.

I use an absorbent product designed for oil/chemical spills in my zip-lock bag. That stuff absorbs 100 times it's own weight. Easier to pack out and cheap for me.

I usually try and hold it until I'm done with a hunt simply because I don't like making any noise or taking a chance of a deer in the brush seeing me open the door or seeing a Shiner beer color stream spewing out the window! I usually have to go so bad that I'm damn lucky to make it down the ladder!!! Nothing like balancing on a ladder with your rifle on one shoulder and a backpack on the other while trying to get the old fly down in a mighty big hurry!

I'd love to hear your opinions and experiences.

I have a great story for this thread.

Last year, my brother and I set up a ground blind for deer we knew were crossing a certain area for water. Saw deer every single morning in the area.

Well, as luck would have it, an old friend from high school was in the hometown this certain weekend and so knowing that he loved to hunt deer, we asked him to come along.

Early in the morning, we got to the hunt site and my old friend pulls out this "earth" cover scent and proceeds to spray himself down, his backpack, his boots, his legs, his body, etc. He was very careful to "cover" any scent that he would possibly have. He offered some cover scent to my brother and I but we politely declined.

My brother and I moved into the blind first and as we were getting settled, still in the dark mind you, I heard this splashing sound and to my absolutely astonishment and horror, my old friend was taking a cow sized leak "right beside the ground blind". Absolutely unbelievable. My brother and I just simply looked at each other. Now, you can argue one way or another on whether or not it will spook deer, etc. BUT, WHY WOULD YOU USE COVER SCENT AND THEN PEE EVERYWHERE. Why not just set up a neon sign that says "Here we arrrreeeeeee".

Needless to say, we didn't see a single, solitary deer AND that is the last time I hunt with my old friend from high school.

By the way, take a 20 oz. coke bottle into the deer woods with you and use that.

I don't know if it hurts or not, but i usually just kick the door open and let it ride. Most of the deer around me are 100 yards or more away, so it doesn't seem to bother them.

I was under the impression there is a difference in the composition of urine from a carnivore vs a herbivore. Your post indicates you don't think so. Just curious what you base that on.

Seriously are some of you guys kidding. Pi$$in by your blind attracts deer or makes them more inquisitive . If you don't think a deer can tell the difference from human pi$$ and coon pi$$ your crazy. Why would wind direction or covering human scent etc.. be a big part of hunting if they were curious over smells. I agree deer are somewhat curious animals, but when they smell something that ain't right there gone. A empty detergent bottle makes a great pee holder, even has a funnel for the less endowed.

I'll carry my bottle and use it, All the trouble to cover scent then piss in the area just doesn't fit. About the electric fence. We have to give a right of way to the lease next door, they cross our fence and go about 50 yards to their lease gate. The funnies thing I ever seen was a young man that pissed on the fence one day when it was turned off,He was on his why in to the stand,on the lease next door. The next morning I plugged in the fence before leaving camp, than about 15 minutes later the young man was headed to his stand on the lease next door, well he stopped at the same spot to take a leak, you could hear him in the next county. Still to this day we have not seen him back their yet.

We found scrapes one time on our lease that had been hit about a month prior to season opener. We pulled out our knives and begin to scrape up the same trees in that path that the deer had been following, and we pee'd on every one of them, and everytime we walked by them. We saw more deer that year than we ever have. Might should have done that again this year.

I used to hunt with a guy that was so paranoid about this it was not even funny. His stand was about 15' high, so climbing down and walking in the woods was not a option. He felt not only did you put more scent on the ground, by feet and bodily fluids, it was not practical to get down every so often do preform this chore.

He did not like the idea of a jug, he said it seemed like it was always under foot and heaven forbid if you lost the top.

So he devised a urinal so to speak, so he did not have to leave the stand, but could also maintain scent control.

Here it goes per his specks, 1- funnel,1- metal circle clamp to fit the spout on the funnel, 18' of garden hose, 1- 5 gal. bucket with closeable lid, 1-tube of silicon caulk, and 1 cork or stopper for the inside of the funnel.

Mark the center of your bucket with a marker, and cut out a hole the size of the water hose.Next dig a hole underneath your stand to put the bucket in but leave it uncovered, take the end of the hose and put about 8" in the bucket and silicon it to the top of the bucket, and let dry. After drying run the rest of the hose up your stand thru a hole you drilled thru the side of your stand, siliconing this also.
Now attach the funnel to the other end, with a circle clamp, silicon at this point won't hurt either on the connection. Punch a small hole thru the top of the funnel and drive a small nail in the side of the stand where you want to hang it.

At this point it's finished, the cork or stopper is for the inside of the funnel to keep any smell from coming back up the hose.He keeps bottles of water in the stand and after using it he flushes it with about a 1/4 bottle of water. After the season he replaces all the components and starts all over again.

HOnestly, use a 1 liter mountain dew or pepsi bottle........the wider opening is much safer and more confortable......

Maybe a one-way valve on a bladder with a hose on your, leg, that runs down to the bladder strapped to your inner thigh under your clothes. Wow, i am going to get rich!

...1- funnel,1- metal circle clamp to fit the spout on the funnel, 18' of garden hose, 1- 5 gal. bucket with closeable lid, 1-tube of silicon caulk, and 1 cork or stopper for the inside of the funnel.

Jeez...I just use a bottle in my pop-up and tripod and in my box blind I run a piece of 1" PVC down the leg from one corner, and about 6" into the ground. Top it off with a funnel on the inside of the blind and you are done.

Saturday I urinated next to my stand not once, but twice, while I had deer at my feeder. One 140 4.5yr 9 point, 1 131 4.5yr 8 point and a young doe. Never left or even knew I was there.

Reason such good deer b/c we on high fence and we specialize in aging good deer for our clients

OK I'll throw a new wrinkle into the equation.
I don't mean for this to be ugly in any way but for all those that are convinced that it's a terrible thing to do; what about a female urinating by the stand. Is it all the same or do the different hormones make a difference?
I've heard some interesting stories and opinions concerning female hunters. Especially at certain times!!!!!!

I've conducted several lab test under closed conditions, and I have found out that any female close to a deer stand while during those special times is astounding.Deer actually scent these changing conditions, and are at at peak during the mentioned times. However, they do get put off, by the nagging, constant complaining, and generally foul mood of said target bait.

In my research it is better to leave said specimen at home for the weekend to enjoy chick flicks, laying in bed all day and eating like there is no tomorrow.

While said specimen has it's advatages, it's not worth the carry over effect from this maladay.

Are you sure it's the deer that are put off?

My father in law has a funnel in his box blind with a hose that runs through the floor and out on the ground below. Its a redneck urinal. He kills plenty of deer. So, i guess it doesn't matter.

From what I heard all urine smells the same. Although I don't think this applies to animals or humans in heat. When I bow hunted I carried a ziplok and dumped it out on the fire mounds on the way back to camp. Now I just let it fly.

I know I have spooked more deer shuting the blind door after peeing out of it than the peeing did. I dont try to pee in/around stand, but i fugure climbing down and walking 100 yards in to woods would be more likely to spook deer than piss.

In 2007 I just got into the blind and realized that I hadnt gone to the bathroom that morning. about 20 minutes later i felt like I was going to explode so I opened up the door and went right out the back this was about 545am. at 615 the largest deer I have killed to date walked out broadside at 65 yards. 148 10pt 23 3/4 wide. when I was in college we decided to play a trick on a buddy by saving urine in a 5 gallon bucket. Three days before the season opened we poured the whole bucket around his stand and feeder. No effect at all. He still killed deer but asked several times if there was a sewage processing plant in the area. We never told and I am convinced that it does not matter

never noticed it affecting the deer, matter of fact i had old timers tell me they pee in the scrapes of deer when they find them. they say your urine has testostrone in it same as a bucks and that will attract them. But never seen a study done on it either.

I'm an Aggie, what can I say. In addition this guy was a braggart and always telling everyone that he was the best at any hunting sport. If I need help, there were 6 others peeing in the same bucket. For three years we harrassed him in every way we could think of. Most of the time he was to dumb to even know he was being harassed. Went on a south Texas dove hunt and he brought his ammo but somehow his shotgun got left in College Station.

To Pee, or not to Pee? I let it rip right out of my tree or blind. Heck I've got to the point to where I take my Chew with me and still have them come in within spittin distance. Now if I'm dropping off another hunter at his blind or bringing him by his feeder I try and go out of my way to pee cause you never know how if he's a bottle kind of guy.

For the record, I sat in my stand all day last year. Got down 3 times and pissed in 3 different spots around the tree I was in, all on the downwind side of me. The last 30 min of the day, this guy came in, circled around to my downwind side, came in to the tree I was in, and shot him with my BOW at 13 YARDS!!!!

Oh, and by the way, he scored 166 3/8, but then again, I don't know what you would call a BIG DADDY!!!

What you should see, are the pics I got from the 2010 season. I made a scrape and peed in it. Then hung a camera over it. Just in a 24 hr period, I had like 8 does and 6 or 7 bucks hit that scrape. I wasn't surprised at the bucks, but sure was at the number of does that checked that scrape out.

When I was a kid, my dad had a strict rule that you don't pee within 100 yards of your tree stand, so I had to make lots of trips up and down the ladder to the stand, then into the woods for 100 yards. On one of my trips, I leaned my gun against a tree, took a couple of steps away, and started taking a leak. When I finished, I turned around and there was a buck, between me and my rifle, looking at me the same way my dog does when I hide her squeak toy. In a flash, the buck whirled around and before I could pick up my gun, he was gone.
From then on, I would pee ten feet behind the stand, and it never seemed to make a difference.
By the way, I have also found out that urinating is a great way to attract doves and other game. At least that's the way it works for me.

Doesn't bother me to let it rip next to my Tree stands. In almost every set I've gotten setup, there is a scrape or two nearby. I pee at it right when I get to my stand and sometimes when I leave too. The big bucks still come in and those scrapes get even bigger and bigger.

I have a buddy that I hunt with told me he pees on every tree around his feeder while filling them. I was helping him fill feeders one time. I told him that I needed to pee and he told me to pick a tree. I told him I didn't want to contaminate his area and he insisted that I pick a tree. So I pick a mesquite tree and hose it down really good. The next time he and I went to the lease that mesquite tree was rubbed and torn to shreds... I would have never thunk it!!!

I will say I have peed just outside my feeder pen multiple times in the same location (by a tree) and I have done this from the time I started building the pen. It has been several months and the deer have been all over my feeder.

Now, I will admit, I may be missing the big one due to my urinating by the feeder, but I have heard the big ones don't typically come to feeders anyway...

Either way, I am not sure one way or the other about this whole peeing business, but I say, let er rip

I kill deer, hogs all the time, (I know I will hear about this) if I been drinkin a few beers, I just stand up in my tripod and take a wizz, still got animals all around me. biggest deer I ever killed, 22"spread near Gonzales after I spent most of the afternoon at Lotties Bar, I dont smoke, but I smelled like an ashtray I'm sure. nice 10 point 142 buck is hangin on my wall.

I never used to but last yr I was helping my FIL fill the feeder when he took a piss not 2 feet from the feeder. I thought well, no deer are coming back to this spot.

Truth is, we saw just as many deer as before with absolutely no difference. I was suprised.

I use to be paranoid about not peeing anywhere near my stand until personal observations of how deer do or should I say don't react to human urine. Now its out the window or the door.

I have a setup similar to the guy on Cougarfoot's lease. I have a funnel attached to a garden hose , which is zip tied to one leg of my enclosed tripod. I've actually had deer walk under my stand on the way to the feeder.
