I have a 870 express (20 ga.) i had always used 3" sheels & it worked fine, i decided to use some 23/4" & it wouldn't cycle them, it would eject the spend sheel but will not chamber the next round.

are u using winchester super X ammor rofd??? if so, give it all to someone and buy a different kind. ive seen way to many guns that dont wanna cycle winchester super Xs. o, and its what made my 870 work not so great, but i wouldnt trade it for anything, any gun that can take the abuse mine has is a good gun!

Brandon A I think you may be on to something. Thats what I was shooting last year during dove season when mine acted up on me. What do you run through your 870 now?

Have you checked to see if there is a burr in the chamber or if the chamber is rough? Express and Wingmaster shotguns are identical internally, but the parts in the Express guns are not as polished and cleaned up as they are in its more expensive brother. 870s should shoot whatever shells you put in them, so while the Wichester ammo may stick more than other ammo, I don't think the ammo is the problem. Regardless, if there is a problem with the chamber it is a quick fix. Here is a link with more information. http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=1&t=283989

yeah i have been using the super x shells. I called a gunsmith and he stated being now Walmart sells so many 870 express there considered or known as walmart gun not 870 . He stated they mass produce so many that the barrel needs to be reemed or debured . he stated that may be the cause or could be the shells if firing shells with steel primers instead brass said steel expands not allowing u to chamber another round without forcing the pump in which is what i have to do . i will 1st try shooting different shell any ideas on type in should use.

Mine had to be the super X shells bacause I had no problems with the Federal's. Very strange you would think it should be able to shoot anything without an issue.

mine remington 870 express magnum does the same thing....after a shot is fired some times it wont eject, because the brass swells up and gets stuck i the chamber....take some light sand paper a sand the inside of barrel down our take it to a good gunsmith if you feel more comfortable with him doing it

I have two 870 Express Magnums made years appart that have the same problem. My older Express definately has problems with Winchester cheepo bargin birdshot. I was struggling to pull the slide back when using Winchester discount ammo on dove seasons opening day this year. I had no prolem with discount (value pack) Federal birdshot. My newer Express has had problems with various loads including 3 inch magnum turkey loads. I bought that shotgun new from Wal-Mart and after it's first shot I discovered that couldn't get slide back far enough to eject the fired shotgun shell. It's fore-grip was so poorly shaped and out of spec that I had to sand wood off of in order to get the slide all the way to the rear. The slide was rubbing against the underside of the barrel. Live and learn. ![barf barf](/forum/images/graemlins/default/barf.gif)

I returned a new 870 onces as it failed to eject the first time out in the field.
The replacement has worked flawlessly.

Remington quality control has been getting a bad reputation lately and I guess this is why. All of the 870 Express' that I have shot will shoot anything you put in them, but they are a minimum of 10 years old so I guess they were making better guns back then.

Express' will rust if you don't wipe them down with oil after using them. It only takes about two minutes and will keep the metal looking brand new.

I guess if you think about it you shouldn't be surprised that winchester ammo doesn't work in a Remington shotgun, they are major adversaries. I wonder if the reverse is true & winchester shotguns have problems with remmington sheels. I wonder if winchester shotguns have problems with winchester sheels
I just bought 300 rounds of winchester super X ammo for my 10/22, should i be concerned about this ammo?

The aluminum shells expand and will prevent my 870 from extracting. Can't pull the slide for 10-15 seconds, which means its basically a single shot. Switched to short brass shells and no problems at all. Not sure of the age of mine since I bought it used, but this is the second 870 I have had and both had a problerm with the aluminum cheepos! SO now I buy heavy dove loads, and every gun I have works perfectly with them. My new Yildiz even has a problem ejecting the aluminum shells. Only gun that I have that has no problem with them is by Beretta AL12.
