I have about 3500 sq ft I need to level my front and side yards. Soil is good not clay and going on top of ZeonZoysia. Some spots are close to 1” ruts, very few though.

I am reading and it says to use masonry sand. I am sure I can get that delivered, any options or where to go in the DFW area if I need a different type?

I do not need to dethatch, I will scalp, fertilize then spread the sand with the leveling rake.

Before I start this process are there companies that do this? I would not know where to begin, landscaping company?

Probably best if I have the sand delivered and drive to Home Depot for some general labor.

Opinions or any advice would be great.

Why not compost ? lots better for grass.

Need a solid foundation. Grass is healthy and fine.

Compost breaks down and, in the end, doesn't fix low spots nearly as well as sand.

I'd be very leary of putting 1" of sand down but doing so depends on how big the spots are. The less area the less problem I'd have with it.



Yes, mason sand. I use Living Earth. I think you're in the Arlington area and they have a store there. Four yards minimum for delivery. With your size requirement you likely won't meet the minimum for delivery. The rough rule of thumb is 1 yard per 1k. Of course, that is influenced by how much leveling is needed.

Don't sand until the grass is growing vigorously. I do it peak season or near.



I've only come across one myself and they wanted way too much. I've heard from somebody else there's another business that does it but have no info on them.




In addition to the landscape rake I use a shop broom as well as a drag mat towed by my lawn tractor.

I did this by myself in my backyard a few years ago. It turned out well and wasn’t really that difficult. I got the sand from a local supplier who sells rock and gravel. Hauled it home in my dump trailer. The last pic is only ten days after putting the sand.

Thank you. I'm blushing and I haven't even posted a selfie.. Seriously. Mickey's post is spot on. You're more than 30 days out. Wait until your lawn is banging with growth before you sand. Mid May, Memorial Day weekend would be my target date. I know you're in a rush and cannot stand it, but don't rush it, source it, and let the process work.

That does look awesome. I plan on ordering a load of masonry sand and fill in some low spots this year. Most of my bad low spots are where the sprinkler system ditches were dug and then settled when we built 7 years ago. After I get those addressed, I`ll use the sand that's left on the other spots that stick out the most. Probably not gonna start until sometime after the first of May. My lawn wasn`t fully greened up last year on April 15, but it was rocking on May 15. Just have to wait and see how it greens up this year. My goal is to smooth it out enough that I don`t have to raise my Rotary Honda as much later in the summer to avoid scalping.

If you need more than 1/4 in to fill in low spots, how long do you need to wait between applications with a Bermuda lawn?

Don't be scared to go heavy on Bermuda. I've seen it totally sand capped where you couldn't see and grass and it came right back through it no problem.
