In the next days and weeks, I want to go on a hog hunt that I've been organizing. I was wondering if anybody has any experience hunting in the various WMAs, and if so, which one do you think offers the most opportunity for me to successfully harvest a hog, based on what you've experienced?

While it has been a long time since I hunted it, I always had good luck hunting Alazan WMA on the Angelina River bottoms at the southern edge of Nacogdoches County, between Nac and Lufkin. It's small (about 1,700 acres, IIRC), but lots of hogs. YMMV. Good luck. up

P.S. Watch the water levels. When the river is up, lots of the WMA is prone to flooding.

Not sure where you live or what part of Texas you want to hunt

If you buy the $48 public hunt permit…..

A wma that has more pigs than I’ve ever seen in my life was Richland creek wma, (trinity river bottomland) I haven’t been there in ten years or longer but when I was there I saw half a hundred in one day…not sure how the hunts are nowadays but back then it was open for a few weeks a year to anyone with a public permit.

Many of them are closed now for hunting. You'll have to look at the catalogue and see which are open year around.

Many have switched to draw even for hogs. But there are a few that still have hog hunting this late (early) in the year.

No matter how high a duck flies a hammer still breaks a window.

You need to purchase a $45 APH permit from TPWD or go to some of the the national forests that just require a hunting license like Angeline or Davy Crocket. Sam Houston National forest has a ton of acreage to hunt but an APH is needed to hunt that NF.. You need to go walk some creek bottoms and look for signs and set up for dusk when they start to move and bag one. There are not a lot of choices out there in texas. I live south of Houston so the SHNF is the only public land that I know of where I can go hunt 365 days a year with my rifle for pigs that is close for me. It wont be easy you will need to go put in some time exploring and scouting. Your results will depend on how good your hunting skills are. If you sit in a stand all of the time and don't have any tracking skills I wouldn't expect much. It takes a little bit of skill to go find pigs and be successful in public hunting areas. Go walk the creeks that is how I find them. Good luck!

GO TRUMP!

You have to consider the methods allowed also. Virtually all the WMA's have feral hogs but you can't know if they are trying to control them by helicopter shoots. That said WMA hogs are often pretty astute and pattern hunters easily or are almost completely nocturnal. Luck and how much work you plan to put in make a lot of difference.
