Well I have decided to peruse other positions outside of the company. I really do love the culture and the company but with this Covid setback I do not wish to wait for a Company turnaround. This "pivot" included moving to a lesser position with a substantial pay cut. I appreciate the company "finding a place for me" but I believe it is time to move on. September will be my 7th year.

I have interviewed countless candidates as a Regional Sales Manager now I am on the other end of the desk. I feel nervous, anxious ...feels weird. I have only had 4 position interviews in my entire life and got the position every time.
The recruiter has given me some test questions and scenarios. Some I Of the scenarios I would not have asked anyone I was going to hire. Off the wall questions..... Not wrong questions but very thought provoking questions. I am just going to wing those.

Either way, 2nd interview is tomorrow at 3:00 via Google Market. 3rd if I make it will be in Philadelphia I believe, but there is a possibility the VP of Sales will be in DFW the latter part of this week.

It is crazy, I am in sales and can talk to anyone about anything, but interviews are terrifying for me, as well as public speaking (another topic all together that I have shared). Heck I do not even NEED this change. I know, just have that mentality and it will be easier..... a lot easier said than done.

Thanks for letting me vent and share.
cheers

Best of luck. You are more adventurous than I am; but adventure is why we are here.

Good luck super duty. I've been at my job for almost 11 years. I too, am currently considering moving on. It's a very nerve racking thing, but I have come to the conclusion their are things I want to do in my life that wont be possible with my current employment.

If the interview isn't in person, you can always try doing it after few beers. Might just take the edge off LOL.

And quit the whining. You're a salesman, as I was. You're gonna go in there, kick a$$ and take names. Just don't move to Philly.

In the same boat currently. COVID sure has made me see the good and bad in a bunch of companies. Timing is bad right now and the market flooded with people. Once the market starts turning around I’m going to get real serious about leaving. Had 2 interviews before this started for a promotion to district sales manager but with them being told to lie to us just isn’t in my cards.

This reminds me of the last recession. I had no college education and my office assistant had a masters degree.

You are selling yourself instead of "widgets"! think of how you sell to a new prospect and frame your interview around your experience.
This is your interview not theirs, control the narrative and remember you need to lead the dance not them. Good luck!! I have been in Business Development for many years and it is tough out there given the
current business climate.

Relax a little. Anxiety is normal in such a situation; it makes you sharper. So let me make sure I understand. You are going to have some conversation with intelligent people who in fact, are very interested in you. You are going to get to talk about yourself and subject matter in which you very familiar with. You are so familiar with the topics of discussion that you are considered a professional. SD, seriously, you’re going in the first round. I kind of like your odds.

Good luck after 23 years my company sent me packing, no severance, and only 2 of my 4 weeks vacation. That's life, stay with them till you get the new position.

Vent away brother.

Interviews are stressful on both sides of the table.

First of all, SD, you know the old joke about public speaking.....a typical person’s fear of public speaking is so great that at the funeral, they would rather be in the box than delivering the eulogy.

Second, remember who you are. You’re very accomplished in your field and have been for many years.

Be yourself. Being you has gotten you everything you have. Be proud of that and know that it will continue.

I spent most of my day completing online assessment tests for a company I applied for. I understand the value of having candidates completing some of these to weed out people who might claim they know how to use a computer program or to see if they have basic knowledge of the technology they will be selling, but I did three different timed versions of problem solving assessment tests and I see zero value in it. All of the tests are timed (10-45 multiple choice questions, must complete all questions in a number of minutes, usually between 10-30 minutes, no changing your answers once you move on to the next question).

Some sample questions:

How many times in a 24 hour period will the two hands of the clock be on the same number?
Susan will go to the theater if she finishes her homework assignment. Which of the below is TRUE? (Followed by three of four true statements, such as, Susan finishes her homework and goes to the theater. Or Susan doesn’t finish her homework and doesn’t go to the theater.)
A board has 100 squares on it. Each square is either blue, red or green. The sequence of colors is, one blue, followed by two red, followed by three green. Of the 100 squares on the board, what is the highest number square that will be blue?

I can see the usefulness of having candidates taking some sort of problem solving assessment, but not three, and I think it should included business situations the job would call for. Not problems like “a train leaves Chicago at 2:15 central time heading East at 95 mph. A train leaves NYC at 11:30 eastern heading west at 86 mph. When will these trains pass each other?“ questions like, “your stakeholder at the company you’ve been working with to implement our product solutions has not responded for over a week. How would you go about finding out if the person still works there or unexpectedly is out of the office for a long period of time, in order to meet the deadlines for implementing the product?”

I don’t see the value or relevancy in asking these questions, especially 100 of them. It’s bizarre to me. This is the rare case and an extreme example, but I’m a little shocked that companies are implementing this strategy. Maybe it’s just me.

Good luck. Sounds like a good opportunity. Hope it works out for you.
