I planted both about 5 years ago. Both grew pretty good. When planting the next year a guy at the local feed store told me once you plant wheat, you'll have to start fertilizing. Not sure if that's true or not. He was selling fertilizer also. I've fertilized since and still not much grows but I believe it's just the clay at my place. Wheat till grow on a rock if it's got moisture.

It's true hard work never killed anybody, but I figure, why take the chance.

I do 50/50 oats/wheat. I like oats and think they are more attractive to deer, but there's always the chance a real hard freeze will kill oats off.

I do nearly the same, but maybe 60-40, 70-30 and for the same reasons, Wheat is a hedge against a long freeze, but I'd bet $5 deer prefer oats palatability

Turner Seed in Breckenridge has a fall deer food plot mix you might like to check out. They know their seeds.

I agree with western about 60-40 or 70-30 I planted a food plot about 20 miles from Gatesville about 2 weeks ago. I planted a small plot of peas and they took off. The owner said the deer are already hitting it. This is a pic he sent me.

If you have to make a choice, do oats, but you could always put in some wheat as they say as an insurance policy of a long hard freeze that would kill the oats.

And despite what anyone tries to tell you, there is a clear difference when it comes to rate of germination between seed oats and feed oats. Check the bag to make sure you’re getting seed oats.

Now havng shared that, you can get deep into a discussion on seed oats that goes far beyond what that guy sitting behind the counter at your local feed store can go. In many cases, he or she is probably no more aware of what’s in the bag than the truck driver who dropped off the load. Whatever the case, good information is available at the link below.

Not all oats are created equal
