Looking for tips to help estimate the height of axis buck on hoof. Have hunted plenty before just getting more selective and looking for ways to estimate live axis buck.

A grown buck will be about 35" at the shoulder.

They're tough to judge.

Assume a mature buck has a head that's about 10" long. If his antlers are 3X his head, you're probably 30" or greater. Of course, that assumes it is a mature buck. Head is shorter on a smaller buck. But this 3X rule has been pretty good for me in making sure we've got 30" or better.

If he raises his chin up and his antlers go all the way to touch his back haunches, you're in the same territory.

In general, it's kinda like white tail. When one makes you go "oh damn, he looks like a Morgan horse with antlers!" then it's a really good one. If you're doing lots of math, it's going to be a little more dicey.

The "rule" I use is with their head down feeding, if the antlers are as tall as his shoulders they are 28". Obviously there are other factors, mostly width, but that's where I start my estimate.
