My first rifle was an m1a springfield and it is a decent and well made gun. I wish I had never sold it. However I did take the money and bought my current hunting rifle a sako 85. That along with my AR's are really all I have had experience with in rifles except to handle a few really nice customs that my buddy has.

So yesterday I went to the range to shoot my buddies new bolt action in 270. he is a bow guy and hasnt hunted with a rifle much and didnt have a lot of experience so I helped him get sighted in. he had a $400 rifle. Very popular brand and their cheapest version I think. Im not going to say what kind because I dont want to step on anyones toes.

I had no idea how cheap a rifle could actually feel in your hands. I mean the bolt throw sucked and squeaked and was rough and everything about it just felt yukkk!!!! It didnt shoot well for me but he was satisfied with how he shot it.

Is it me or do others have this same feelings when picking up a cheap rifle vs a nice rifle?

I must be spoiled!

Although most shoot very well, the entry level "Bic" rifles don't do it for me.

I think there is a difference between Cheap and Less Expensive. For me as long as it is accurate and the accuracy is repeatable then I am good. Whether that is a $300 dollar or a $2000 dollar gun. I just expect more from that expensive gun.

Very spoiled. All mine fall right into position like a broken in pair of boots. Hand loads tuned to the rifle, scopes that are very clear, have well made controls and very good reticles.

I would rather have a few excellent rifles, than a large number of mediocre ones.

You said you had a Sako. Most anything compared to that may suffer in comparison. My Sako bolt locks up like a bank vault door, smooth and solid. The Tikka is good too, but not like the Sako.

I kind of have the same philosophy on guns with fireman about having less but buying quality.

No it wasnt a ruger or a savage but I wont say anymore

I like rifles that shoot where I aim them as long as they’re not a Savage. I’ve never owned a Savage and never will. I worked up a handload for a customer of mine that has one and the action was terrible, but it was a shooter. I took the customer and let him kill some hogs at a buddy’s place after I got it dialed in. He killed a couple of hogs and I told him how great his rifle was. He didn’t help clean up camp Sunday morning and fired off all 100 rounds I’d loaded for him while I was cleaning up. He grabbed my notebook and ordered $180K in parts and we negotiated a service contract while I was driving him home. I was happy to reload that brass the next week. That rifle is the only savage that will ever have any value to me.

I love my 2 Savages for shooting at the range. They are wonderful for that purpose. For hunting, I'm probably taking a Ruger 77, Kimber 84 or a Tikka CTR.

Spoiled rotten.

I used to be a quantity over quality guy until I got to bolt action rifles. Then I realized how nice a well-made gun can feel and what a big difference it can make in how much you enjoy shooting. So I sold a handful of guns and bought one nice pistol (stainless Colt 1911 with a wonderful trigger job), one nice shotgun (Beretta AL2 with beautiful scroll work, a beautiful stock, and fits me perfectly), and one nice rifle with a great scope (Tikka CTR with SWFA HD 5-20). I will slowly upgrade those over the years, but I'm very happy with what I have and I definitely feel spoiled when I see some of the other rifles at the range.

I pretty much did the same, I have a few rifles that are of higher quality that I won't part with.

The next step is a wormhole. I sold my CTR and a few others to build a semi-custom on a Tikka action. It’s hard to go backwards from that. If Tikka or more appropriately Berreta would sell a heavy barrel rifle in the US in left hand I would likely have never took that step. The CTR was an excellent rifle and unless shooting competition on a serious level I don’t see the need for more.

I plan to replace the barrel with a Bartlein or PVA pre-fit when I shoot out the factory barrel (only about 1,000 rounds into it right now), and upgrade the stock at that point as well. The throat on the Tikka 6.5CM is so long that if my lands wear any more at all, I wouldn't be able to get .030 jump in an AICS mag. So I'm sticking with my CTR stock for now since the CTR mag has a decent bit of room left. The only exception to that is if I find a stock with a CTR inlet that I love, and I could conceivably upgrade that half sooner. But I don't have any reason to upgrade the barrel until I shoot out the factory piece. It's just too good to spend money to replace, and it's a great size for a decently long string but fairly quick cooling.

And I 100% agree that they should make the CTR in LH. They already make it in limited calibers - it wouldn't be that hard to expand to left handed. And they'd sell a ton of them.

They make it. Berreta will not import it.

I reckon. I bought a Sako when I was 15 with my summer job money. My Daddy thought I was crazy but it beat The heck out of those sporterized Springfields and Remington Woodsmaster pumps he and his buddies were using. I’ve used it every year since.

Funny thing is they had bought us kids Remington 700 BDLs when we were little. So the kids were better gunned than the men in camp.

Until this year, every rifle I owned was blued steel/walnut stocked. Then I bought a "cheap" Savage Axis rifle (6.5 Creedmoor) with a "cheap" Weaver 3X9 scope. Total cost $303 (Taxes included).
I now own a "black" rifle with a bead blasted matte finish, plastic stock and a scope that others would throw away.
Took it to a range yesterday to finish sight-in prior to hunting season.
It grouped under 1".
I am very fond of classic rifles and own quite a few. I am not an "Eletist" that assumes that you MUST spend big bucks to have a decent hunting rifle.
I will hunt and kill a deer with the cheap rifle, this year (Because I can!)

I have a Savage Axis too as a beater truck gun. It will flat out shoot. Nothing really wrong with the cheapo rifles these days except their “feel”. They definitely “feel” cheap, but the stuff that they kill doesn’t seem to notice.

I see a lot of other hunters carrying "Bic' rifles. They work fine. For many hunters, the rifle is just a tool. For gun nuts on the forums, it's their main hobby.
