Yes, the state of Texas says it needs to be titled. If you buy one without a title, like I did, make sure the MSO from the manufacturer has the persons name on it that you are buying it from so you can make sure its not stolen if there is not a title.
Also you need to get a bill of sale.

It is the states why of making money off you again, you decide if its worth the hassle.

I have been checked numerous times by state and federal GW's and not once has any of them ever ask to see my motor registration.

This is very common with people buying mud motors from out of state and bringing them into Texas.

From what I have heard, the only reason for getting the title for the motor is if it gets stolen, some how it will help police maybe find it. Don't think it is something GWs are suppose to check. The 7hp motor I bought brand new from CA for my momarsh, I remember it was a real pain to get it titled, I can't remember what it was, but there was documentation I had to get from manufacture, it was such a pain I almost gave up.

Thanks for the info. One I am interested in has BOS but no title per the owner. I think it'll be worth the hassle though. Just out of curiosity, what do you do for a homemade mud motor? Also thought hard about building one.

My buddy just talked to the game warden about that. He said if they see it’s homemade they’ll never ask about it. He also said since most mud motors are such a pain to get a title for they’ll usually leave you alone about those too. Mine came with the original paperwork from mud buddy from when the previous owner bought it, but it’s never been titled. I’ve seen people have problems registering mud boats that they bought used for the first time because the boat had a title but the mud motor didn’t.

Most folks (including me) will be less than enthused about buying something without a title. Certainly not a problem until you go to sell it or if it has an unknown sketchy background.
