Bought him a youth savage 110 in .243 before I discovered he was left eye dominant. Have been wanting to find an older jm stamped 336 youth 30-30. Any other ideas on what would work well? He can shoot the .243 but would rather him have something that would work better for him

You can get Ruger Americans in a left hand.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

The Rossi levers come in 16.5” barrels and are top eject. Get one in a pistol caliber like 38/357 or 45 colt. Factory loads have little recoil in them and can later be pushed harder for hunting. The 92 action the Rossi uses is extremely strong.

Shot one today for a co-worker of my cousin. It managed less than inch at 100 yards using Hornady Black ammo.

Tikka also makes the T-3 and T-3X in left hand. I have three LH Tikka actions. No pain to get them, via order. All shooters.

Pain in the rear cycling, if the rifle is unsupported.

Just be sure to have him shoot left-handed, from here on out, if that isn’t already the plan.

All the above work another route to consider is a single shot like TC Contender or Encore or Ruger #1. Those are as ambidextrous as it gets.

The Rosi 92 is a good one as well, but if going to put a scope on it talk to Ranch Dog on here about scout options. Also will throw in the 44 Mag version into the mix as you can shoot 44 Special from it for lighter power loads but will still kill deer at closer ranges.

Good luck and he might not like it at first but in the long run you are doing him a favor

but better than shooting a right action rifle with a right handed cheek piece of off the left shoulder. And with a thumbhole stock it is easier to support when cycling than a standard stock. Of course a totally left handed gun would be the best but they can be difficult to find sometimes.

Why did you buy him a Savage in the first place? Did you like the rifle? I'm a left-handed shooter, way past 10, and my left-handed Savage .243 is my go-to rifle for almost everything.

So with the right handed rifle in a left hand stock one would hold the rifle against the shoulder with the left hand and cycle the action with the right hand. How many 10 year olds have the strength to do that.?

Whole lot of rifles out there with ambidextrous cheek rests.

Thumbhole stocks are the worst at assisting in cycling, no matter what hand is used.

Only way someone could leave their firing hand in place, and cycle an unsupported rifle is to point the muzzle to the sky. Unless of course they are grizzly bear strong.

Left handers are not a difficult to come by as they were. I've had to order them, sure, but it wasn't more than a week turn-around.

I won a $400 Cabelas gift card in a raffle. I did t need anything for myself and bought it to put away for my so. Who was too young even for a pellet gun at the time. He was right handed and had no clue his left eye would be very much dominant over his right to the point he naturally brought a gun up left handed

It’s great to learn about his eye dominance at such a young age. I was somewhere in my 20s before I switched to shooting left handed. It was never really questioned up to that point but my shooting seemed to get worse as I aged. After shooting left handed for an hour or less I was shooting better than I had in my life. My right eye would get weak and wander around.

Single shot for a while. At least until he figures out if he will shoot righty or lefty going forward. Have seen several youngsters swap after shooting for a while.

It may not really matter much. I'm left handed and have always had to shoot long guns left handed. Except for my Citori, I've always used right handed rifles and shotguns.
Just make the first shot count.

just me
i'm left handed, and i learned to shoot right. (also)
when i was a kid in the sixties, you just didn't run
down to the local chain store (there weren't any) and
pick up a left handed anything. you could have a left
handed rifle made, but my dad didn't have the money for
one, and he wouldn't have spent it on one if he'd have
had it. he had several rifles, and he was like "well there
they are. you can learn to properly use whatever of this
you want to, or do without."

i've shot many an animal and bird right handed with bows
muzzleloaders and modern rifles and shotguns

I think it’s more about eye dominance. That can not be taught. I’m right handed and shoot left handed because of my eyes. I did at one time shoot right handed. Poorly.

Same here. I only own 1 left handed gun. Benelli semiauto 12 gauge. Don't like the hulls flying by my face

For my son it is definitely a dominant eye issue. His mom is an optometrist so she has stressed how natural it will be for him to shoot left handed vs right. While I look for a good lever gun that fits him I will let him try the .243. I agree that on shot is all it really comes down to

Jdh78, I raised a son that hunted with me. Still does when college and girls don't take priority..Lots of great times to come for you guys. There are many on this forum that like to hate on Remington. In my honest opinion they offer one of the best options for your left handed son. Their left hand youth model 700 is offered in both .243 and 7-08. He will likely outgrow the youth dimensions in 3-5 years. When that happens, either a full size 700 short action replacement stock, or take off stock will be more available for a Remington 700 than any other bolt gun. Good luck getting your boy set up.
