Need comments for relief of gout. Have used tylenol and ibuprofen which helps some.

Over the counter pain meds will help some but the flare ups I've had are beyond ibuprofen and Tylenol. You need to prevent it. There are certain trigger foods that cause some people to have problems. If you can figure that out just eliminate them. I can't figure what causes my attacks so I take Allpurinol to control the uric acid. The build up of uric acid is the root cause. I also take Colchinine at the onset of an attack and this seems to help shorten the episode. Both are prescription. Have some blood work done to see if you have a high level of uric acid in your system and treat it accordingly. I take Allpurinol daily. Hope this helps. The attacks can get very painful and last quite a while as well.

Thanks Jetdad , uric acid is too high. Dr. gave me Colchinine (4) the other day along with Prednisone 20 mg (4) to take over a 2 day period. Took 1 of each first night and the swelling went down. Pain has remained the same I will follow up on food and Allpurinol. Thanks again!

I feel your pain man. I'm sure the Dr. has you stepping down the Prednisone dose. It's not good to stop it abruptly. Hopefully you can figure the cause. Organ meats, beef, shrimp are all high in purines and contribute to high uric acid levels. Good luck!

The meats listed above are known triggers as is alcohol abuse. Drinking plenty of water helps flush the system and keep Uric acid levels down. Some folks say eating cherries regularly will prevent flare ups. I have 4 coworkers that suffer from gout, 3 are on daily prescriptions.

I had it twice. Hurts like crazy. Drank water by the gallon, and the gout passed rather quickly, thank goodness. Uric acid crystals being the problem, my engineering brain thought higher fluid intake might dissolve the crystals. Either I was right or I was just stupid lucky, but the problem went away.

Completely debilitating - I try to limit red meat and shellfish combinations. Stay hydrated and lots of ibuprofen.

quit eating the food you're eating now would be a good start
Prednisone makes me goofy Allpurinol works but prevention was the ticket for me.... see first statement

I feel your pain and as others said can be debilitating. Seen the dr and ran uric acid test. Mine is always a little high. I have flare ups 1-2 times a year and have never been really able to ID my trigger foods but know that if I eat red meat, shellfish a lot in short span of back to back days I run risk of fare up. I don't take daily rx mentioned above any more (they work as maintenance but I just hate taking pills) but when I notice a flare up coming on I take prescribed Indomethacin immediately and every 12 hrs for 1-2 days along with more water intake and so far it clears out in that short time frame.
