The guys who've hunted Inks Lake report that the locals put a lot of effort into staging a huge welcome and making sure everything they can do for the Hunters will be done.

Spent some serious time looking at that area to move to before we wound up over here in Anderson County...and Burnet County is still high on the list of where to go next now that our requirements have changed. Good Luck and make sure you get to Marble Falls and eat breakfast at the Bluebonnet.

mbavo, From Ink's SP there is a hwy that runs along the north side of the river & lake back to 281 that is worth the drive. When you go up the steeper grade slow down and look for the parking area turnout for the best view you'll ever see down there facing south.

There is also a signed road off of 281 just south of the Burnet City Limit sign as I recall that will take you to the Longhorn Caverns unit.

Back when we were house hunting idown there in 2011 &'12 for a cheap place to stay the motel on the NEast corner of 29 & 281 in Burnet, across the street from MickyD's was the most accessible & least expensive that my wife would stay in. Our "Mission" in those days was not a vacation/pleasure trip but to see as many house's we'd spotted online as "mebbe's" as possible. Spent 3 days running both sides of the river from 281 to the top end of Lake Buch.

Austin Dot Com $$'s busted that dream of affordable real estate as we were at least 10-15 years too late. Run the south side of Inks from the Lake Buch dam all that way back into town for some purty country. That area with the gated community & private marina is where my old Weatherby Rep road buddy, Dudly Grounds wound up before he passed away.

I did the doe hunt at inks last year. The staff is very nice but you do not have any choices on where you hunt. They put you in a blind and whatever comes out comes out. They do have the nicest blinds i have ever been in no doubt. I shot my 2 doe limit the first night but it didnt look like there was a lot of deer coming to the feeders at that time. Not a lot of deer seen by others.

Man reading these pages has me bummed. I know it's my first year jumping into the Texas Public Hunt system but I had hope. Currently all 4 draws I'm trying for say "Pending 2nd Draw". What are the odds one of these will turn up? Or should I set my sights on next year's draw and finding something private?

About 0 chance on the second draws. I mean it could happen but its not. If thats all you were in for then you probably wont be hunting public this year. I have been putting in for 8-9 years and have been drawn 4 times 4 deer and a turkey hunt, never on a second draw. Since it has gone to onlime and been able to put in for multiple locations in the same category my success has gone way down like 1 draw in 4 years.

All I can say is I have the luck of the Irish this year or someone is smiling down at me. I drew GDA at Matador 12/5-12/9 a couple weeks ago and was very happy. Then I got the email yesterday that I had won GDE at Kerr WMA 11/13-11/15. I gladly surrendered all my loyalty points accumulated over the years. If anyone has any tips or pointers for either feel free to PM me. I have already loaded the custom map for Matador into my hand held GPS. Can't wait for these hunts. deer2

The truth is sometimes the adventure aspects of east TX national forests can't be beat.

odds of second draw opportunity are very low. All hunters that draw in the first round are given 10 days to purchase their permits. Any left over permits are offered in the second draw. So imagine a hunt with 30 permits. 25 hunters purchase their permits. Your odds for second draw are 500% less than the initial draw. My math 1500 applicants for 30 spots, odds of drawing are 1 in 50. Now 1475 applicants for 5 spots, odds go to one in 1 in 295.
