Been Nutria hunting at a buddies place for several years but this year has been an explosion of the water rats

Decided to take my tracking bed mate with me so she could get some excersis.never would have dreamed that she liked catching the Nutria.

She had a great time and saved me some bullets.

we did eat them until they started tasting a bit off. They used to be tasty, then they got nasty.

Think big-azz rat.

I hammered 'em as kid back in La. We can thank the McIlhenny (Tabasco) family for introducing those here. Hurricane broke a pen apart on Avery Island in early 1900's. They are the scourge of the coast now.

50 or 60 years ago they were introduced to some stream as a way to control undesirable plant growth. That did not turn out very well.

Exotic markets getting around $30 lb. may be a little side hustle for you. Maybe get a free fur coat as well.

Actually, rats are omnivores while nutria are herbivores.

Sorry, call it whatever you want... it's still a RAT! smile

Myocastor coypus is the only living member of the family Myocastoridae in the suborder Hystricognatha within the order Rodentia. Its closest living relatives are degus, American spiny rats, and hutias; some authorities classify the nutria with American spiny rats in the same family (Echimyidae).

Actually, no. The dentition of both indicates a primarily herbaceous diet. The amount to which either may feed on flesh will vary by species (in the case of rats) and by circumstance (both rats and nutria). Nutria will ingest limited amounts of insects as part of their vegetative feeding, but will also seek out and eat mussels and crustaceans.
