Has anyone had any experience hunting Herbert Preserve in Waller? If so, how was it?

Im planning on checking it out tomorrow afternoon or Friday morning myself. I figure after opening weekend it should be quiet. I've never been myself, but it wouldnt be a bad thing if there were some folks out there so I wasnt just watching dove fly by the other side of the field all afternoon/morning.

We hunt across the road and the area was basically devoid of dove.

On Sept. 1 my son and his buddy were going to hunt there. Due to some unforseen truck troubles they departed Houston late. They arrived at the Pennick/Herbert Road intersection about 6:25 am.

The place had lots of hunters. 84 vehicles were parked along the boundary on Herbert and Pennick Roads. The two young men set in the truck until 7:30 am. During that hour they heard a total of 3 shots that were on the property.

I would say very crowded and TUFF hunting.

Luck favors the prepared mind.

Yeah that's the report my brother in law gave me a few years ago on the opener. I might try out there later in the season or just drive by it to see how many people there are.

I was there on September 1st. Yes, several dozen trucks there.
I decided to still go in and saw a group take out about 3 dove in total.
I would then see about 2-3 more dove fly by, but out of range.

I went back later for the evening, this time there were only about 8 trucks total.
Again, a few dove that I spooked as I was walking across the Milo crops. However, this group on the north end sounded like they were tearing it up around sundown on the north end. Heard several dozen shots and watched them go around and pick them up.

I went again yesterday morning, September 5th. About 3 trucks there.
It was same: A few dove flying by and a few that again I spooked as I was walking across. Took some shots as they were flying out, but missed both occasions.

I'm just going to wait until the cold fronts start to push in.

I went out yesterday afternoon. no birds flying, and there were only 2 other hunters on the field. It's a nice looking property and seems like it'd be promising, but it was just dead yesterday. Think we need a cold front up north to push them down.

Quick update. Went back this morning. D.E.D. Dead... 2 or 3 other hunters on the field, heard a couple of shots in the distance but only saw a group of three flying high and way out of range. Not sure if its just the field, or dead around this area at the moment. Talked to a game warden and he indicated the field is pretty hit or miss and that the few folks he'd checked on that morning werent having much luck either.

Thanks.
I was curious this past weekend, but had to take my son to take the Hunter's Education Course in Conroe.
(Very proud of him, and he had a good time).

I'm still going to wait for the cold fronts to come by.
With these daily thunderstorms, I'm thinking the field is a mud pit now.

I was there Sunday mid morning to early afternoon. Maybe it rained after I left but it was dry as a bone when I was there.

Went out this morning. Lots of fog, about 8 or so other hunters. In chatting with a few the two guys that had the best morning had shot 1 bird.
Chatted with the game warden as well, he said there may have been some shooting out there recently, but not a lot of killing.

What is planted there to attract birds? Or repel birds it sounds like.

I am tempted to go out there Friday as well, some things have to line up so I can make it happen.
