Hello all, I'm in the planning stage for a Mule deer hunt at Lake Meredith. This will be my first time hunting public land. I've been acquiring gear, and doing a ton of online research, map scouting, etc. I'd like to talk to someone who's been there and who wouldn't mind corresponding via email, phone or text and maybe answer some questions. Not looking for anyone's spots, just some general questions about the area, what to expect for weather, water sourcing, things of that nature. I've been eyeing the devils canyon trail as a starting point. I have the map of the hunt area from the park, but its pretty general. Thanks in advance!

I have hunted Meredith for both WT and Mule Deer. It’s rough and not for the average with rough terrain and having to cover lots of ground on foot or horseback. A river runs down the middle and small water holes here and there. Start high and glass. You will find yourself glasig and moving a lot as the Bucks are hard to find. Plenty of Doe and Spike. Devils Canyon is not a bad spot to start. Their is a Facebook page for Lake Meredith Hunting where you will find lots of help and information if needed.

Thanks for the reply. How was the hunting pressure when you were there?

Whitetail you will find orange every 5’. Mule not so bad but understand that is the hunting location for so many. Best advice I can give is do your best to stay away from weekend hunting. The weekend brings a war zone to that place and it gets pretty bad.

That’s a good choice of days and you will need most to scout.

We've bowhunted Meredith the last 7 years for mule deer, got my 1st mule deer buck last year. Devil's Canyon is great but it's 3 miles from Plum Creek. Lots of glassing and if you're a whitetail Hunter it will take experience to learn that mulies ARE NOT whitetails. They behave totally different

We’re looking at hiking down devils canyon trail towards devils canyon. Is Plum creek an area we should focus on? We’re planning on hunting the last week of rifle season. I’ve been studying up on mule deer, but this will be my first time chasing them.

There always seems to be plenty of quail, not crazy amounts like my deer lease but I wouldn think it would be pretty good hunting
