My son stopped at Walmart in Bowie today after work, they have a close out on the Vanguard select entry level rifles. He bought a 270 and I picked up a 308, $248 each. They were regularly $458. Even for an entry level this seemed like a heck of a deal. They had a couple left, not sure about other stores, just passing along

I noticed that too Stoney. That's a good snag for sure. They also had the wood stocked Vanguard for $349 here in Midland.

Ain’t a thing wrong with a VG1 if you just want to kill something. Just make sure and get it in a 257 for its superior ballistics! Lol. I kid! I kid!

If that was the Deluxe Sporter model with high gloss bluing and stock, they've dropped the price even lower than the $499 they had on them at my local Walmart. The gun is almost identical to the Weatherby Vanguard Series II Deluxe (which lists for over $1100) with just a couple of minor cosmetic differences. I paid $657 for one a couple years ago.

All the Weatherby Vanguard Series II models being sold at Walmart carry the same sub-MOA guarantee as any other Vanguard.

Stoney, that would be worth a drive to Bowie. Did they have any more?

There are some calibers that will kill once, bring them back and then kill them all over again just to prove a point! roflmao

Truth is, I’d shoot a dern spitball right now just to say I went shooting lately.

I picked up one in 243 today for $249+tax. They are vanguard II's. They have the 3 position safety and 2 stage match trigger(very nice) and the owners manual says vanguard II. The guy infront of me picked up the deluxe high gloss wood/ blue for $349+.

I checked my local Walmart this morning and they’re offering the same close out prices. I would not be surprised if they start appearing for resale on GunBroker.

IMO, the $249 model would make for an excellent "camp gun", a gun that you leave at camp just as a backup. If someone breaks in and steals it, it's not like you lost a $1500 gun, even though these guns are just as accurate.

OK ya'll got my attention ...what calibers are usually available? so far all I'm seeing ya'll talk about are 30'06 & 243's...anything else in either composite or wood? Can't use anything in a belted Mangler with the lame shouder though....but one of the CF 22's might be fun too.

I could like a 7-08/308/6.5CM/260/270 but only choices in a 243 & '06 leave me a little bummed, but at those prices could be doable I guess. We'll go see what the locals have left me to choose from PDQ. Thanx for the heads up ya'll up

Ron,
The tag said 243, 270, 308, 30-06. I'm not sure how Walmart handles availability of the various calibers per store though.

Palestine has a few black guns left in 243, a 270 and a 30'06, as I got the last black 308, and the last wood stocked 243 just now. Still a decent looking wood 270 too. 24" barrels on all of them, that will have to get sorted out on after I use them a while. There is a Savage SS barreled CF 30'06 rifle of some sort on the rack too, but it not part of this Wby only SALE, and the only '06 in the store, outside of the WBY VG's on the Sale.

Was put off a little at first by the looks of the 270 black guns stock, in handling the LA 270. OTOH The more I fondled and fooled with the SA 308 however made it difficult to buy a 2rd black gun in 243, as the wood 243 had a home picked out already. However the more I handled the black SA 308 the more I liked the balance and "pointability" and feel in my hands, much more "solidness" to the stock it felt like to me as I remember them than a Ruger RAR's. The "PLAN" is to use the black 308 as the go anywhere for anything "Rough Gun", wearing the Minox ZV3 A/O 4x14x44 or an old Korean Made Bushnell 3x9x40 depending on job at hand, in 1" Warne steel bases and Med Rings already on hand.

The LAST Mulligan Makeover is underway...Snooze Ya Looze....

Thanks for the heads up.
I went by the Wal-mart here in Bonham after church and picked up the last 30-06 they had. They might have had another caliber, but I didn't see any out in the display.

My Walmart had 243, 308, and ‘06 all in synthetic but I passed. May check the other locations to see if they have the wood stock.

I was told you won't see these closeout VG's on the rack, they are stored off the retail floor but the Spt Gd's clerks can tell you what they have in stock...and agreed very quietly with my comment about that being a real PIA, especially when I asked to see several calibers in both wood & black "tupperware". Prolly gonna be totally out of stock IMO PDQ and for sure by next weekend.

I know the gun rack at my local Walmart had many more empty spaces last night than it did early yesterday morning. The word must have gotten out concerning the clearance prices.

But as was the case during the run on .22 ammo, I could see a few Walmart employees holding some of the rifles back for certain buyers.

There is supposed to be one representive model of each on the rack. They have 4 or 4 calibers.
They will go fast as they don’t have that many.

Found a wood stock .270 in Anna today banana There was a black 30-06 on display but was not marked clearance, it would probably scan clearance price but I didn't have them check. When getting the box for the .270 out of the lockup he said he saw a 30-06 box but figured it was for the one on display and did not check to see if it was wood or black...

The wood stocked versions are pretty but heavy! I picked two of the black ones out a 243 and a 30-06. Both have good triggers and handle just fine, though I liked the 30-06 a bit better. The 24 inch barrels don't bother me either.
