Is there any appreciable difference in conventional 209 shotshell primers and those sold for use in modern inline black powder rifles?

I don't know, but I'll bet there's no difference at all. Why would the manufacturer reinvent the wheel?

Can't say for certain but I know my dad used shotshell 209 in his but that was probably before bp specific 209 were made.

I have used the shot gun 209 primers in my black powder rifles for years that work fine. I believe the ones actually made for black powder rifles have less energy in them than regular 209 shotgun primers. I believe they do this so the primer does not dislodge the powder and projectile before the powder actually ignites.
