I have a Flir R Series thermal scope that is not working worth a flip. At 1x at 45 yards I cant make out a pig. My Pulsar I cant count hairs with at that range. What could be wrong with the flir ?

You should be able to see somewhat better than what you are mentioning. My first guess is that somebody adjusted your diopter (eye piece). Adjust it until you can see the crosshairs very clearly and your image should clean up nicely.
The RS scopes don't have an objective focus, IIRC (or some don't). So if diopter adjustment doesn't do the trick, you probably need to contact FLIR for service.

I’ve tried that but it goes from bad to worse. I’ve called flir and left messages several time and have yet to get a call back.

Fairly new it belongs to a friend and he’s had problems from the start with it. So he told I could use but it has something wrong with it.

Tried to call flir today and left several messages. Still no call back. I’ve never been so disappointed in a company as I am there. When I messed up my pulsar Sell Mark was on the ball helping me out and replaced it pretty quick. It’s the only thermal I’ll buy to use guiding

Yep, the good folks at Sellmark who handle Pulsar in the USA are OUTSTANDING with their customer service. FLIR is a pain in the butt.

Calibration they call it. There's a button on top it looks like that says "Cal". You need to do that with some degree of frequency. https://op1.0ps.us/pdf/opplanet-flir-thermosight-r-series-operators-manual-pdf.pdfYour automatic calibration may be disabled. If so, that could account for the poor image.

Yeah, some people call it 'calibration,' others call is 'screen refreshing' and others call it "non-uniformity correction" aka "NUCing." (Pronounced "Nuking")
As time progresses, the the thermal image will deteriorate due to a cumulative build-up of signal noise (aka "thermal drift") of the thermal core sensor (microbolometer).
Most units will NUC on boot up and may need to be NUC'd a time or two before the microbolometer settles down and then maintenance NUCs will be needed at various intervals depending on the environmental conditions at the time in order to keep the image clear.
