I am wanting to start bow hunting this season. I purchased a bow earlier this year; a Hoyt Charger. It's pretty much RTH but I was looking for advise on good arrows, broad heads and anything else that I may need to get started. I don't have to have the best of the best but I don't want the cheapest stuff either. I've already got feeders set up because I've rifle hunted for many years now. I plan to bow hunt out of a pop-up blind because I don't want to climb my big a$$ up a tree.

Answers will vary a WHOLE lot. I’d join the local archery club and get some advice from someone you can actually shoot with. Welcome to a great addiction.

Go to a good archery shop. Not sure what's in your area. Bring your wallet and don't bring your wife.

Might look at a couple of more spots or blind to hunt out of also. Bowhunting the same location over and over regardless of wind is not a good idea. Mature deer will pattern you. Like posted above find a good archery shop and get their advice. Arrows and broad head choices vary as much as rifle and calibers do from hunter to hunter. Good luck this year.

Do you have any buddies that bowhunt? They can give good hands on advice, better than trying to figure out what people are telling you on the forum.
As mentioned above, an archery shop will help you if you intend to spend some money there on arrows and such.
Just getting into the game, you probably are about a month or two behind, but it's not too late to at least get somewhat proficient with your bow if you have the right instruction....Practice, practice, practice, and shooting at game is like night and day shooting at a live breathing animal, so you have to be at the top of your game.
Starting out set your bow at a low enough poundage that you can comfortably pull back and hold. The reason for this is you have to work on your form, so repeating the shot consistently is what builds accuracy.
Too many new archers set their poundage too high and struggle trying to be manly pulling the same poundage as the more experienced archers.
You will be using muscles that you don't normally use, and you have to build them up and steadily increase the poundage you can handle.
That's why I mentioned you are probably a month or two late.

Just my opinions, but practice shooting your bow from a sitting position. I'm a big guy too and I find it easier to bow hunt from a tree stand. I use fixed broad heads (Muzzy or SlickTrick). I also use illuminated nocks. I thought they were cheesy until I spent lots of time looking in the weeds and bushes for my arrows. I practice in my backyard and it looks nothing like the woods where I hunt.......

Youll learn more threw archery. Close distance, be pataint, pay attention ta the deers movements, ears, tail. They'll be watching for movement also, the drawing of your bow.
Biggest thing, archery tis way slower than bullet. Even though ya closer, jumping the string, deer will often drop down.



First time archery, buck came up ta feeder 20 yrds away. Was up 20' in stand. Deer went ta eat corn, started draw, it turned looked at tree, stopped my draw. It went ta feed, started ta draw again, it lopked at tree, was just at the brake over point, held my draw. It went ta eat, started ta continue my draw, it looked straight up at me. Then went ta eat. Couldnt finish the draw. Deer walked over few steps, head down dehind tree, drew in one fluid motion, pin on target, deer dropped & ran under arrow.

this is what I found out the hard way.

I won't hunt a stand more than twice before I switch sets

Can't hurt to use a heavier arrow set-up (Easton Full Metal Jackets for example) and a broad head with fewer cutting surfaces.

This will give you maximum penetration in case you miss slightly and contact bone.

Good advice here. Also keep a wind checker on you. If the wind direction changes during the hunt it's best to leave. Practice shooting out of your pop up until you are comfortable. I keep all but one or two windows closed when hunting from a pop up.

I put my pop up blind up at least a month before I'm going to hunt it so the deer get accustomed to it. I use only one window and wear dark clothes so it stays dark inside the pop up. As far as arrows and broad heads, I prefer carbon arrows over aluminum and I like NAP spitfire broad heads because they shoot almost exactly like my field points. If you want fixed blade, I've heard good things about slick tricks. As far as the broadhead tip, I like the chisel tip better than the cut on contacts. Practice how your going to hunt and respect distance because some deer can be very quick, especially if they are nervous, and jump the string and hit them high or miss.
