I need some advice. I know it is just a matter of time before one my anti-gun relatives ask me why it is legal to carry a coin eat handgun at olibraries and public offices but not at a gun show.
Any advise on how to handle this enevitable situationthanks.

I could only imagine the number of loaded pistols at a gun show, if they were allowed. Inevitably one would be removed from the holster to compare, show off, or some other reason. I don't think having any loaded guns in a gun show would be a good idea.
I wonder how many guns are actually sitting in cars in the gun shows parking lot. Sounds like a rich environment for some of the creepy thieves out there.

Do they have metal detectors or something? If not why can't you just carry concealed?

It could be that incidents at gun shows in which guns were accidently discharged has driven up the cost of liability insurance. Or better yet, the insurance companies won't insure an event when people are allowed to carry.

All of the above.

Plus, just from a practical perspective, it helps prevent stolen pistols from walking out the door by folks walking in with an empty holster and walking out with a pistol in it.

Basically makes things easier to control and make safer at the shows.

Maybe an easily comprehensible answer would be "the same reason they don't let you load up a firearm with live ammo in a gunshop."

I have been at two gunshows when there were accidental/negligent discharges. As far as the 30.06/30.07 restriction - I remove my ammunition, leave loaded magazines in vehicle, get my personal carry weapon ziptied, and put it back in my holster. It is mostly about having live ammo on the floor.

Like others have said, it's about safety for everyone in attendance. Unfortunately, rules/laws are often written based on the lowest common denominator among us.

A gun show is a unique location in that everyone is handling firearms for the entire event. The issue isn't carry per se: it's that everyone is there to handle the guns, check fit, etc.

It's all about liability and the ignorant gun toting bubba that create AD/ND scenarios. Gun show promoters are not trying to take your rights away.

I have only seen them one time and it was many years ago at the Mesquite show. They caught a ear full about it from people attending the show and I haven't seen them since.

To any of these responses my anti-gun in-laws would reply:"If you guys don't trust one of your licensed buddies carrying a loaded gun at one your on functions then why should the same guy be allowed to carry a gun in to a library where my kids are?"
That is the kind of objection that hasn't been addressed above.

It has been years since I went to a gun show, but concealed carry was allowed.

If the show is in a city, county, or state owned venue, concealed carry must be allowed by law.

None of those venues allow it. Off duty officers are hired to check weapons and ask about concealed weapons.

Crazy as it sounds, i would have to agree with your in-laws. I think no concealed carry for sure, and really no open carry at gun shows is stupid, and i won't go to one that i can't carry at. If someone can't be trusted to keep their carry gun holstered at gun show, I probably wouldn't trust them at a library either. While i am not opposed to open carry, this is the can of worms that it has opened. If you conceal carry, no one knows you are carrying anyway whether at the library or the gun show, which is why i conceal carry. I don't remember any 3006 signs at gun shows before open carry was allowed, but i could be wrong on that.

Hypothetically speaking i would just conceal carry at both places regardless of what signs were posted and tell your in-laws that many people do and no-one seems to get shot by people who carry. Not withstanding the two NDs that the above poster listed, that is some crazy business

While gunshops don't let you load up, all the ones i know of do let you carry in their stores, but most have it posted that carry guns must remain holstered, unless you get attacked haha

There is zero discretion for public forums. Anyone can and should file a complaint with the Attorney General’s office, which has been good about filing suits to enforce this law.

Take pictures and videos and do something about it.

Yep

Lots of bubba booger pickers and multicam wannabes ruin things. We can’t have anything nice

i would respond with two things...

1) they pay people with guns to keep the place secure whereas other public locations do not

2) With the number of guns and people fitting holsters and such there is a chance that actions could be misconstrued whereas if someone sees someone pull a gun at library something is def not right

also lawyers

I've been at two shows with AD/NDs. Both at Will Rogers in Fort Worth. Both were guns bought during the show by dealers from guys who brought them in to sell, put directly on the table and then another person picked it up, squeezed the trigger and . . .
Then the dealers got an all expense paid, quick pack up and exit from the building.
It doesn't bother me that I can't carry a loaded gun inside.
It bothers me that I am an unarmed, potential victim of theft or worse while in the parking lot. That and the fact that thieves know we are leaving our CCWs in the vehicles while inside and can victimize us that way.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

I believe that my response directly answered those questions. There's a big difference between the secure carry of a familiar, presumably one's own, firearm and a venue where the explicit purpose is to handle strange firearms. A gun show, above all other places, should have exceedingly strict safety requirements precisely because **thousands** of people may be dry-firing **thousands** of firearms.

Nobody can tell, just by looking, the difference between a loaded carry piece and a vendor provided "empty" firearm. It is entirely reasonable to avoid mixing the two.
