Just curious if anyone still uses round nose bullets?
Do they have any advantages?

I use Hornady 220 grain round nose in a 30-06. I get good results, always exit, wound channel apparently had expansion (never recovered one). All my hunting is under 50 yards so BC is unimportant.

RN bullets mostly tube feed, like me 30-30. Keeps tip nullets off primer. Me 303 store bought were rn, found some old military fm at sportsmansguide. Got a case with amo box. Usualy used in tube feed & big African game animals.

I use them in my Granddad's 30 WCF. Never recovered one. Never shot anything over 150 yards away either. As MClark said BC doesn't matter.

The advantage is that it doesn't set off the next round in a tube magazine.

Well ... There was an old bullet test done a number of years ago where the writer took 180 grain .308 bullet bullets from 1600 fps to 3100 fps. As I recall, he tested with eight or ten different bullets, but perhaps the number was a few less. The end results were very surprising in that conventional bullets of the same make and weight (.308 180 grain Core-lokt) but of different shape (spitzer and RN), had different behavior under stress. To cut to the chase, the RN bullets deformed significantly less at very high velocities; they were measurably better than the spitzers.
My takeaway was that bullet shape didn't really matter with copper/bonded bullets, but that it might have a very significant effect on cup and core bullets.

My favorite rifle to use is a CZ 550 American in 9.3x62 Mauser. I shoot 286 gr round nose out of it and to date everything that it has hit has taken an immediate dirt nap. Couple of years ago when I was statione in FL I shot a 7 pt that was facing me at about 80 yards. Hit him at the base of the throat and there was a bullet hole about 3/4 of an inch in diameter just below the tail. End to end penetration. That's good enough for me.

I use them in my 30-30, but the performance is so good that i keep considering buying some for my 3006. I looked at ballistics and i want to say that to around 250 yards of so they were surprisingly flat shooters, but it has been a while so that would need to be double checked.

I've used round nose Corlokt in .303 British and they worked great. I still use round nose Federal blue box ammo in .30-30. Every critter I've hit ended up in my freezer.

I don't currently hunt with any, but the first loads I worked up in my 300 wby was Hornady 220 grain round nose. Always thought they looked cool growing up and they were cheap so I started out with them. They shot really well in the gun, but at 2800 fps and up they were extremely explosive. I shot a few hogs head/body shots with them and decided if I ever wanted to shoot a deer etc. with it I needed to find a different bullet. When it exited there were huge exit wounds. Much of the time there was extreme internal damage with no exit, just little pieces of bullet everywhere.
I talked to chad about it, it was his opinion that the 30 cal 220's were designed for 30-06 and structurally fell pretty short of being used at the velocity ranges I was running them in.
I replaced them with 200 grain partitions... bad medicine!

I replaced them with 200 grain partitions... bad medicine! Another test that I read came to exactly this conclusion about the 220 grain .308 bullets on the market: they were originally made for use with either the .30-40 Krag or the .30-06. in actual practice, they were very soft and penetrated very indifferently at .300 magnum velocity levels. The exception, as you might guess, was the Nosler 220 grain partition which is quite the short-range performer in .300 magnums.

There's nothing wrong with a round nose. The Spitzer theoretically is more aerodynamic so it retains velocity better and hence better at long range.

A couple of years ago at the Doctor's office I read an article in the American Rifleman magazine about the round nose bullets. https://www.americanhunter.org/articles/2016/4/8/5-reasons-round-nose-bullets-are-still-cool/I read the article out of curiosity and the fact that they really look good. They have a nostalgic look of decades ago in the old west. But again curiosity prevailed and I researched info about the Spitzer bullets.

When I first started reloading I was using RN for my 8MM Mauser. Never actually hunted with them but for learning they were good on the range. Later started to use spitzers
