I have used Sierra Gamekings for hunting in the past and they performed very well. It's a try to see its results. Hopefully someone here steps up to the plate and posts results soon. up

I’ll bite the bullet and buy a 1000 rounds and do load development and test at range as well as on animals. I do need need someone to donate a rifle accurate enough for the testing. Preferably in left hand please. Lol

More choices is always nice but the name cracks me up. They developed a plastic tipped hunting bullet. I think now only Speer lacks one.

Pretty sure that’s because Speer don’t need one. Or should I say I’m impressed with their hunting offerings.

Speer is sucking hind teat now days. When you compare bullets across the board. Hornady, Sierra, and Berger are out front.

Hadn’t noticed any Bergers with plastic tips either.
Good to see Sierra keep stepping up. I will be trying that 130 gr 6.5 for sure.

Hot Cor is still a great bullet but now the market is demanding high BC plastic tip bullets. I'm also not particularly thrilled with Speer's history of introducing a new bullet line and then pulling them 2 years later (Deepshok, Deepcurl). We will see what happens with the Gold Dot rifle bullets but it's already clear their BC numbers for that line are inflated.

Availability of speer has been horrid in the past. They have a knack for releasing a bullet then deciding to only sale to manufacturers.

High BC (constantly increasing), consistent bullet to bullet, performs well on game, fair price, Berger being the most expensive of the three. I only have one rifle running on Berger, two running on Sierra, and 5 running on Hornady.

The polymer tip does 2 things. 1- it keeps the tip constant (for constant BC) and does not vary like a HP does. 2- it provides a larger HP opening behind the tip to allow the bullet to open up easier and at lower speeds.

But, the main negative of a polymer tip is it adds length to the bullet. This is a problem in 2 ways, also. 1- you need more twist to stabilize that bullet, since it is a longer bullet than a HP design (bullet stability is based mainly on bullet length, not the weight) . 2- you run into magazine length issues with many polymer tips. With bullets being more aggressively shaped now (higher BC, longer ogive to tip lengths) and are much longer than your traditional bullets, it can become an issue with these bullets fitting and feeding in the magazine while keeping the ogive of the bullet close to the lands. The HP design has less of an issue with this.

I agree with your statement for your application. For 98% of the hunting actually done in Texas you didn’t list a better bullet than Speer. And before you start arguing your point remember I agreed with it.

Edit: my opinion is based on actual on game performance and price. They made bonded bullets before bonded bullets were cool so they didn’t make them “premium” priced.

All those I listed work at close range as well.

For sure they do. For more money.

I’m just being realistic. Don’t get me wrong, I love shooting long range and don’t really pay attention to the price of bullets. But I don’t think that’s the majority of hunters.

And for every bit that the long range oriented bullets shine at long range, bullets designed with a focus towards on game performance shine just as much at "typical" shot distances. No doubt in my mind a partition, accubond, sirocco etc. is a more reliable performer on game than the uber high bc group. Not saying the high bc crowd cant kill game, but on the other hand you can shoot 600 yards with a core lock too ( it just doesn't do it as well).

Hornady ELD-X

The "X" means expand, and they do...

One bullet, one powder charge for each rifle, and that ammo does it all. Just that simple.

edit: Once again, it takes velocity to create penetration and deliver foot pounds. The bullet has to get inside. BC is the ability to maintain velocity. The faster it is going at distance the better off the results. Other end of the spectrum, if I throw a bullet, with my hand, at an animal, all I'll do is spook the animal or it'll brush it off as an insect.

You know ironically I've had more deer run or go farther when hit with an accubond than a Berger vld. Not saying none of the deer were dead in the end. Although had 1 accubond that was a full on failure although I label it as a fluke the deer had to be tracked for around 500yds and dispatched with a pistol.

Honestly, right now many shooters and hunters are overloaded with the various bullet choices right now. The more bullets are on the market, the longer the phone calls get discussing each and everyone of them. The most common question is "What's the best bullet?". I answer the question with a question- what does best mean to you? That answer will help define which bullet is right for them. But there are many good choices out there right now.

I would believe that. Barsness has a kill log consisting of hundreds of kills/bullets used and has posted many times that the exploding bullets like the VLD kill faster than the bondeds, and especially the monos. They also make more of a mess when doing so, at lest that's my experience.
