Going deep sea fishing with the wife this weekend in Key West, she really wants to get a marlin and hang her trophy up there with all my heads, LOL.
So I understand most folks do a fiberglass (??) mount for fish and not the actual fish. There are quite a few folks online that sell/do them, anyone have any luck with one?
Not sure we will get anything, but if we do, I hate to shell out $$ and then her get some hokey/goofey looking plastic fish back

take measurements of length and girth, plus lots of good photos, make sure your taxidermist has experience in finishing and painting billfish blanks. DC

We didn't end up with a Marlin, but did pretty well with the Mahi. I ended up landing a 51 inch cow Mahi. She really liked it and ended up having it done, we used the place they recommended in Key West (Gray's Taxidermy), dang for a replica, it is dang expensive!

Congrats on getting a nice fish. You never, EVER want to do a fish mount from the actual skin of the fish. It is impossible to tan them, and once painted, they quickly begin to shrink, move and change on you. I'm sure you've seen old fish mounts that look ancient, it's the same with new mounts.
The copies are perfect in every way and when properly painted, impossible to tell that they are not real. It's all up to the skill of the person who does the painting.

A properly cleaned and mounted fish will last far longer than we will be around. All shrinkage should be done by the time a sealer and paint is applied. I’ve repainted faded fish that were in very good shape minus paint fade or stain. They were done by very knowledgeable taxidermists. Very oily fish are a different subject, also....I do very few saltwater skin mounts. Nearly all my bodies are hand carved and Neal zero flesh is left. Where needed, duplicate fins, etc. are molded on oily fish.

Might keep an eye out for a used one. Seen them every once in a while...then you know what you are getting.

If it's not too late contact marine creations in homestead florida... Marinecreations.homestead.com. Mike is very good at what he does. Anyone interested take a look at his website... Pics are impressive.
