Scene 1: At my ranch, and my buddy Jacob and I are putting on our snake boots before heading out to fill some feeders and check to see if the bass are biting at the pond nearby. Our friend Marc sees us gearing up and says, "What!?! Snake boots! You guys don't need no stinking snake boots!" (just before that he was asking if it was really necessary to always have a gun on your hip around the ranch).

Scene 2: we pull up to the feeder and Jacob and I exit the driver's side of the car...I was driving and he was in the back seat. Marc exits the passenger side and says a little too calmly and quietly, "Rattler". I thought he was maybe joking and making fun of our snake boots. After a few "you serious, man?" "IS there really a snake?" He says, yes, but hurry up! Sure enough, a 3-3.5ft rattler is headed towards the brush. Jacob and I both draw our 9's off our hips and Jacob put one in the back of it's head after a few shots.

Scene 3: Marc says, "Maybe you need snake boots and a pistol on your hip at all times, after all!"

Scene 4: Marc hunched over his desktop after he gets home, buying a pair of snake boots and a holster!

If you aren't going to wear snake boots you better be paying real good attention the ground around you. I am betting after seeing that snake your buddy had his eyes glued to the ground the rest of the trip.

SnakeWrangler - I understand your 2CENTiments and see where you are coming from. As you may recall from previous posts, I give every single non-venomous snake a pass, and I value what ALL snakes offer in our habitats. However, when I see any venomous ones around our house or by the feeders, I don't take chances. I've got family and friends to look after. If I see them out in the field, I'll take a pic if possible, as long as it won't provoke them, and let them be.

He definitely paid attention to every single step after that! I bet he brings some big boy boots out next trip!

Everybody knows you like them. Most of us don't. I prefer a 12 gauge.

I was just having a little fun....I fully understand not wanting them around where people will be. Feeders attract their prey and thereby attract them...no different than bobcats, coyotes, hawks, and owls.... up
