The owner of one of my grass lease properties decided this year to put in a new deer blind. Trouble was, the pasture was so thick where he wanted the blind it had to be cleared. I opened him up two shooting lanes that angled out from the blind and allows viewing from two windows. These pics were in the rough out stage that I was sending to him as I went. I got everything piled and the lanes cleaned and he came down and we set his feeders and he got his blind built. Plenty of time for things to settle down and the deer to start using the feeders.

Yep. They seem to love the smell of fresh turned dirt. We'll push cedar and the next day fresh tracks from overnight.

All those spots where the soil was disturbed, late August, September, get yourself a couple of sacks of oats, and broadcast by hand. If you can catch a little rain right afterward you'll have a pretty good deer attractant.
If you don't spray those root stumps with 50/50 mixture of Remedy (herbicide brand), and Diesel, it will reclaim pretty fast before deer season.

Once i learned that i didn't "NEED" to kill something, and that if i did kill something all the fun stopped and work began, i was a much better hunter.

I've made suggestions to the land owner on maintenance of the lanes. It's up to him to keep it cleaned out and he enjoys working on his place.

Many discussions on mesquite, and at bottom line of all, it should read, "Mesquite is Satan's toothpick." I have cleared a bunch, with lots more to go, and the only method I have found to be somewhat permanent is to spray with remedy/diesel mix, and once dead push over, cut, or grub, and then be ready to spot spray regrowth, repeat.

Starting with the grubber, before broad spray, I think will work just as well, but there may be more regrowth to tackle. Will be interested in hearing of long term results.

I assumed you grubbed the mesquite good. Those machines are supposed to grub it easy.

Still, there will be re-growth to spray, & some new growth.

If by grubbing the mesquite good you mean you thought I got every root out of the ground then I guess I did not grub it good and it ain't that easy. Mechanical mesquite control will not remove every trace of the roots. Once started, it is an ongoing battle to stop regrowth. If you stop plowing a field that has been in production for twenty years and let it go fallow, mesquites will start growing again. Believe me, I know this for a fact. I have 94 acres of cultivated land that has been in the CRP program for many years. I have to go in and grub new mesquites every 3 or 4 years or they will take the place over. I have a neighbor who had a mesquite pasture sprayed about 5 years ago and got a good kill. After standing a couple of years, he had a dozer come in to push and stack the dead trees. The next year mesquite sprouts are everywhere and now he has 2 to 3 ft. tall mesquites on the entire pasture.

Exactly! It is on ongoing battle. Neighbor of mine decided to push over 4 or 5 acres of mesquite along road frontage. It looked great for about a month, but there was no follow up control, and now after a year or so it is covered in 2-3' tall mesquite bushes. As I mentioned above, even with combination of mechanical and spray, there is a lot of ongoing control needed to keep it from coming back.

One method I am considering is to spray a pasture, but let the dead trees stand until I am sure I have good root kill, and then do a controlled burn. Anyone here ever try something similar?
