Folks,

As a crime victim myself having firearms stolen out of a vehicle, I have compassion for the folks who had all the firearms stolen. I have learned my lesson - never leave a gun in the vehicle you cant live without.

I have considered building a metal chest to hold a rifle/pistol for my vehicle. I know they make some safes for cars but it seems they are rather flimsy or crazy expensive.

Any thoughts on homemade car safes or anyone have pictures they can share?

95% of the time I take my firearm out of the vehicle for this reason. Most of the time, I have it in a holster on me, or take it off and keep it close by. But the main issue is how fast can you access your firearm when it's locked up in a safe inside your vehicle. IMO, it does you no good, unless you take it out for quick access.

But I do know some shooters who keep a small gun safe that has been mounted and secured to the vehicle. It's just big enough to hold a standard pistol.

Not full proof but better than your armrest or glove box.

Hornady Safes

This is what I have under my back seat. It's a tuffy box security box. Bolts to the floor via seatbelts bolts then wing nuts inside the box so you have to have the box open to take it out of the truck. Works great.

I installed one of these in my truck:

If required to go somewhere carry is prohibited, my pistol gets locked up. Otherwise, it stays on my hip.

Another reason why I love the ram boxes on my dodge. I've locked 5 shotguns in one side when we were eating lunch on a dove hunting trip.

When people have broken in to them it costs a lot of money to repair them

Or if they know you have valuable firearms in some sort of secured container they can steal the whole vehicle.
