Anybody got one? I'll be upgrading next year. I'd get another Tacoma just like the one I've got but my needs have changed and will be pulling a small RV a few times per year from East Texas to the Panhandle. The truck will also be my daily driver, about a 90 mile round trip commute each day so I need something that gets decent fuel mileage. Thinking the F150 Diesel checks off all the boxes.

Run the numbers and see. When I bought my truck the numbers didn’t make since for getting diesel

Cost of upgrade and maintenance didn’t override the fuel gains until 150k miles or so

The f150's are going to be spendy. Any savings in fuel is negated by purchase price and then some. At that point I would just buy an ecoboost, it will tow better have a much better performance wise driving experience and wont have any of the emissions garbage to worry over.

Im a big fan of my ecodiesel but I bought a crew cab 4x4 for 35k, the fords are looking to be closer to double that. Also if you are planning on getting a 4x4 the fuel mileage is the pits, ford is advertising a 5mpg hit from 2wd to 4wd.

I would stick with a gas motor unless your towing big loads at long distances. The emissions on new diesel engines are not there to help the engine, emission systems (EGR, DPF) are absolutely detrimental to premature engine failure. Maintenance is double the price and you have be careful where you get fuel, a lot of diesel owners ruined there fuel injection system from contaminated diesel (water). I've owned diesels for the last 20yrs and I'm considering go to a half ton for my next truck and holding on to an older 1ton to use for towing. Maintenance and cost of ownership on diesels are just to high for me now.

They are too new for anyone to know a whole lot about them. They've just started hitting the lots in the last few weeks. I'm interested in the numbers I'm seeing fuel mileage wise...but I don't know what the maintenance looks like yet. I did get a screen shot from a buddy who works on diesels at a Ford house and it was 24.3 over the course of a full tank and that was 2wd...that truck had 10k miles on it.

I have heard they are a lot peppier than the diesel competition. I'm also curious to see what the number will be once someone figures out a way to let them breathe.

I let my Cummins breathe and she happily gets 21-22 mpg around 80 mph

Never had a diesel, but like the fuel economy of this set up. If I were not pulling a trailer now, I'd get another Tacoma. The diesel f-150 will pull 2x what my Tacoma will and get a lot better mileage. It will be the 4WD Lariat. Never having owned a diesel, I'm not sure of the maintenance. I'm hearing oil changes are less frequent, but a little more costly. Also, are there filters that need to be changed, etc........ more often over gas?

Plan on changing fuel filter/filters every 15,000 miles.

Just to give you an idea of cost of maintenance, my 6.7L ford has 2 fuel filters they cost $200 for both add in oil change and filter +$150 and the air filter is about $35. You can use cheaper filters and oil but these are the prices for the recommended fluids and filters. Its also recommended to use a fuel additive. You get the picture.

spg...you're getting hammered on your filters. Here is a good link for you: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004A2BBOI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Here is your air filter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004A2GOK4/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o08_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You can change your oil for about 1/2 that and make it very efficient by installing a Fumoto valve. I do it all myself and it isn't that tough but can be a little messy.

I change oil every 5k miles and change fuel filters every 10k...fuel filters are cheap insurance for a 10k dollar system. This is for my 6.7.

The F150 has 6.5 quarts of oil compared to 13 quarts that the 6.7 does...oil changes won't cost much more (if any) than the gas engines. This thing is a new and different beast, time is going to tell us if it's better than the ecoboost or it's competition in the 1/2 ton diesel market. I know it makes very similar torque numbers than the ecoboost and it's making it at 1,750rpm...but it's lacking about 150hp over the ecoboost, just not sure how much of that you'll feel on your donkey?????

It's an interesting little truck.

Don’t expect that the great fuel mileage will carry over while towing.

Yes, you can go up to 15,000 miles between oil changes, but in my case that oil change sets me back $15 for the filter, and $23x3 for oil, for a total of $84 plus tax, doing the change myself. Fuel filters are critical, and can be expensive. Sometimes they last 15,000 miles, sometimes only 5,00 due to dirty fuel.

I’ve never seen where it was recommended to use a fuel additive?

Right. Not worried about mileage while towing, just want something to have more capacity for those few long trips. This will be my daily driver, about 95 miles per day. Even high 20's will be good.

I wouldn't go past 5000 miles on a oil change unless you delete the DPF and EGR.

I get all my filters from https://www.dieselfiltersonline.com/. Change oil every 5k, fuel filter 10k, air filter 20k. Buy enough to last 20k miles, costs about $250. Free freight over $250. They also have tranny filters and fluid.

Reviews I have read say like the ecodiesel it is slow as molases in January loaded or empty. My ecodiesel has a tune giving it a little more umph than the ford (rated at the wheels, not flywheel and its still a dog) and a little better mileage.

They are both 3.0 v-6's with almost identical output, I just cant see them being too different in any aspect.

My better fuel mileage definitely caries over to towing as well, its just not as amazing. I get 30 hwy empty and 16 towing a 24 foot center console with 5 folks.

Have an oil analysis done on your oil they will tell you if you can run it for longer or need to change it. Many people running stock ecodiesels 10,000 miles on a change have sent oil samples and were told oil was good to run longer (rotella T6).

In the bigger motors (6.7) people were having a lot of issues running full synthetic. They came with a syn blend, as that’s what was recommended. All of the sudden, Rotella T6 became a low ash oil ok to run in trucks with particulate filters. I have always ran Rotella T5, and changed at every 15,00 while under warranty. Now she is deleted and warranty ran out, I will be going down to 10,000 mikes and doing an oil analysis every other oil change. Hoping to put an Air Dog on it for cheaper and easier fuel filter changes in 15,00 miles.

I'm curious about the f150 diesel, but pretty much know the answer. Diesels are just not worth driving anymore like 15-20 years ago IMO. Too much EPA junk for me to worry about. I currently have a 17 ecoboost 3.5 and it's probably my favorite gas truck I've ever had. It will absolutely accelerate quicker than any gas truck I've owned (16 since 2007). Only time will tell about longevity. Dont get me wrong, if I were rich then I'd have a new diesel deleted and tear up the road..lol..With the price of diesel, it just doesn't make sense for me and I average 700 miles a week. Just depends on what your heart desires. Good luck.

Do you pull loads, like an RV or similar with your Eco Boost? All this feedback has me thinking. If I only pull an RV a couple of times per year, and the daily mpg difference is 5 mpg, the math isn't putting me in a diesel.

Seems like the only thing that will support your high miles is a Tacoma or Diesel

I have a Tacoma. Great truck and I'd get another just like it were it not for the occasional towing I do now. Not much difference in Ford ECO Boost and Tacoma on mpg. Tacoma is a better off road get in the bushes, cross the river truck.
