My wife never fired a weapon of any kind before we met, but always wanted to learn to shoot. We started out with the .22 and then the .22-250 that she used to take several hogs. Then I bought her a Remington 700 Youth Model in 7mm-08 that she absolutely loves!!! Her first buck was a spike. That was also her first time to cook and eat venison. She really liked it and was hoping to get another this last season. We own 68 acres and we're surrounded by much larger properties. On our deer cam, we had 5 legal bucks coming around every night. Two where nice 8 points, the others where spikes. Opening day we where in the blind before first light and didn't see anything for an hour after shooting time when the smaller 8 point showed up and worked it's way along the tree line towards the food plot. He was in and out of the trees. Just as he got to where he had to come out of the woods to get to the feeder and food plot, and hog showed up out of nowhere and walked across the food plot and straight to where the buck was standing. As they got face to face, they scared each other off and we never saw that buck again. About a month later, the bigger 8 point started showing up on the game camera around 9am. He did this 3 or four days in a row, so when we saw this on the pictures, we made it a point to be out there the next morning. At 8:20, he showed up. At first glance, my wife said it was a hog. I was shocked and thought she was looking at something else, so I told her it was the big 8 point. Her response was to tell me to be quiet, she had this!!! She took her time and let him feed for awhile until she had the perfect broadside shot. Of all the hunts that I've been on, this was probably the most exciting!! Thank you. She is very happy with her buck. Loves that it came from our land. Loves that we enjoyed the meat. And she just loves looking t it on the wall and remembering that day.
Funny thing is that she has some very good friends that where anti hunting, who bad mouthed me to her about the mounts that I have on the wall. Typical stuff, so I didn't really care. But over the years, she has explained to them about hunting, how we don't kill everything that moves, and that we enjoy eating the meat of what we take. After posting pics of her deer on FB, some of those friends actually get it and commented how what a great memory that was for her!!!!
There is hope.

Very nice deer. Great feeling to get a buck off your own land. He's a dandy too.
