What belt grinder should I buy as a beginning knife maker?
What other equipment and what brands are highly recommended?
What order did you buy your equipment in?

A whole lot depends on how serious you are about staying with it long term. I started with a 2X72 from Grizzly. I still have it and use it for somethings but my primary is a 2X72 3 hp. variable speed with both a flat platten and a 10" contact wheel setup. Good variable speed grinders aren't cheap but they are worth the money if you plan to stay with it for a long time. Some start with just a 1X32 from harbor freight and some even start with just using hand files.
What type of power tools do you currently have?

I started with harbor freight and wound up with hearing aids.

What type of power tools do you currently have? Thank you for your response Mike. I have been in the construction and commercial building Maintenance business for 40 + years. I own at least one of most power tools and hand tools. The grinder appears to be the first piece of equipment I need to purchase and while I certainly don’t need to start with the best out there, I do want to purchase a very good one, and I want to purchase the right one based on others experience in the knife making profession. The good news is that I’ve found my belt grinder to be an invaluable tool to have in the garage whether I’m working on knives or not. I use mine for small welding projects, furniture repair, auto repair, you name it. I don’t think they are a bad investment for someone like you that uses tools for a living. A serious knife making grinder would be a 2x72 variable. I’d look for something like a KMG.
