I have been playing around with working up loads for a 24" Howa 308 for a little while now. I believe that I have finally worked up a load for 168 grain hpbt rounds over Varget. I have since found that Academy sells the 4064 for the same price that some of the lower priced web sites sell it for, without the added cost for hazardous shipping. I have been doing a little reading on the internet to see what, if anybody else has been doing with this combination. I was going to look at working up something that is close to the velocities that i get out of the factory loaded 175 SMK's since my rifle seems to really like those. Anyone worked up any 308 loads with these bullets and the 4064?

Had alot of good results with 175's and 4064. My pet load was 175smk, 42.2gr imr4064, federal brass, 210M primer w/ 2.82" coal. Nasty accurate in my m1A and Savage 10fp. Was about 2600fps in the m1A and 2650fps in the bolt gun. The eldx may like a slightly different seating depth and charge but can't imagine it be a very drastic change.

H-Varget is extremely temperature stable, and is terrific in the .308
IMR-4064 is not listed as an IMR Enduron powder, therefore not temperature stable. I would not trade H-Varget for it, ever!

IMR4064 is a great powder and works very well in 7mm08 and 308. Actually I have gotten better groups with it than anything else. But it has a drawback, very temp sensitive. Throughout the the year, you will need different load workups if you are looking for sub MOA groups. That is the reason I recently switched to H-Varget hoping to lessen or totally eliminate different load workups.

I had pretty good results with 42.8gr IMR4064, but when I switched to Varget (44.2gr) my groups have significantly improved. I'm seating the 178 ELD-X bullet .010" off the rifling for now.
Although the Varget is better for me in that application I'm still a big fan of IMR4064. For 168gr loads in my 308 the 4064 is unbeatable thus far; plus I use it in my M1 Garand, and Mosin Nagant.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I didn't realize the 4064 was that temperature sensitive. I might run both powders through and see what it looks like.

4064 is a great powder. I have personally used it for several rounds. 4064 has been around since the 30's, and was a top powder in the 60's and 70's for standard calibers, like the 308 Win. 4064 and the 308 would be similar to peanut butter and jelly. It is a very good powder for that, and has been around for a very long time. It is more temp sensitive than other powders, but it's not that bad, honestly. It is a very long extruded kernel powder and a single base powder. So on the scale of powder temp sensitivity, it's not that bad. You can load some very good match grade ammo with that combo.

I can’t even guess how many deer, pigs, and coyotes I’ve shot in various calibers and using IMR4064. Somewhere in the hundreds. Maybe if a fellow is doing serious long range target shooting, there are better options, but 4064 is a great powder for hunters and shooters. I’ve used it since about 1980.
