This is going to sound dumb but does a bullet follow the rifling all the way out of the barrel or does it ever skip any grooves, assuming all things are in new condition? Once it has pressure behind it, and once it engages the rifling, does it remain engaged?

Also, does rotation direction ever matter in relation to where in the world you are? Like a toilet that rotates one way or the other, in relation to the earth's magnetic pull? I would imagine this does affect you long range guys in some way or another.

Just sitting here on Monday morning, thinking and NOT wanting to work so I figured I'd ask some seemingly stupid questions nidea

does a bullet follow the rifling all the way out of the barrel- Yes. (see picture below). Here's a picture of a fired bullet that shows the grooves from the rifling. The bullet will grip the barrel all the way down. For example, in a .308 barrel, the rifling is .300" and the grooves are .308". The bullet fired is .308" in diameter, so the bullet grips on the .300" rifling for the spin.

rotational direction in the world would be the Coriolis effect. You can read about it online, also. Yes, it will have an effect on the actual bullet trajectory the further away you shoot, and which direction you are shooting. There is also spin drift, which is the pull or drift of the bullet due to it spinning. Yes, you have to account for this also, but it's a small amount, often lost in the amount of wind drift. Inside of 1000 yards, I do not account for spin drift.

Take say a 308 and run the data with no wind and no spin drift at 1000 yds and it will say zero correction needed BUT then turn on spin drift and see the difference.

When coriolis is concerned, the calculator needs to know azimuth. What direction, in degrees, on the compass are you shooting. If you are pointing at 90° (east) the target bacame closer during flight. At 270° (west) your target became farther away during flight. North and south you get a left right movement. Even at a mile shot, I have not worried about it.

There was a long discussion on Sniper's Hide years ago, Brian Litz even got involved. Yes is exists, most of the time it can be disabled in the calculator because wind is a bigger concern.

I see spin drift effects on my range, each month.

So basically, worry about bullet drop and wind drift with my short little chip shots. Got it.
