Anyone have any success on getting axis into your feeder pen? My pen is pretty big at 60 ft radius. It is only 36 inches high with one strand up barb wire at 40 inches. Inside I have water, corn and protein. I have up to 20 deer inside at once but all the axis stay on the outside. Thoughts?

You do not have to wait for them to be inside before you shoot them

In my limited experience and observation, they don't hop fences as readily as whitetails. They will, but they have to really want to. And I don't think they crave corn as much either.
But I've been told I don't know squat about axis on here too, by one legend in his own mind.

Creekrunner knows more than i do bout axis. history of axis native envirement didnt ing even LF. were as white tail has been jumping LF ever since the range wars. Both were natural browsng. White tail are better built for jumping than axis. Differance being tarrain & natural predtors of region. & the so called baiting ( farming), been around for ages. Thats a different debate. Agree with the why wait post by SS.

I have axis in my protein pens every day. But that’s free choice protein not corn. And they can come in on their own time and avoid crowds of white tails. It’s also only 3’ hog panels no barb wire.

IME with whitetail and axis, both prefer to go thru an open gate or under a barbwire fence rather than jump it. When pressured an axis can jump just as high as a whitetail can. I have heard stories of axis deer jumping out of an 8' tall catch trap. So if they want in the pen they will jump in. Bust a bale of alfalfa hay inside in the middle of the feed pen. If you can find some molasses poor some on it to up the smell. If you can still find chaffhaye a the feed store that may work even better since IME axis like it better than regular alfalfa hay.

Been feeding whitetail and axis on the same places for many years. Axis don't care as much about corn, and they're less inclined (not able) to jump a fence. So if you want more axis *in* the pen, remove the fence and/or start feeding some other stuff (protein or alfalfa). My experience is that axis will vacuum up corn every day if you don't put a fence between them and the corn.

My buddies place in Bracketteville the axis come from the neighboring property, we watch them jump the cattle fence to get to the corn and cotton seed. Maybe the ones in your area aren't athletic.......

Maybe the ones in your area aren't athletic....... They will certainly do that, but it depends on what else they've got to eat, pressure, etc. Take down the fence, and you'll get more of them more often even if conditions are ok.

I have corn, water and gravity fed protein inside. I haven’t tried alfafya yet. I would have thought the protein and water would have drew them in. I would have thought the 3 ft hog panel would be nothing for them. Mainly have it up to keep horses and cows out.

I built it three years ago this month. Just got a picture yesterday of young axis who walked around it but never got inside. It had corn, protein and water inside the pen when he was going around it.
