We primarily hunt the Rolling Plains and Edwards Plateau regions each year.
Seems like another dry year but I was wondering if locals are seeing birds or lack of them this year.

Last year was so dry and the cover where we hunt was pretty beat up.

What are you guys seeing out West?

thanks

Plenty of birds in big lake but haven’t seen babies yet. Need some rain.

I saw 4 pairs between Throckmorton and Munday today. Saw 2 pairs on Knox City Oilfeild and none between oilfeild and Rule but it had started getting warm already. Went to Odessa and wound up staying here in Fisher County at a freinds farm. There was a pair in the front yard when I pulled up.

Fisher county didn’t catch much rain at all, tanks are dry.The guys at Knox county said they got 5” in a hurry last week. It flooded everything. I heard Throckmorton got 3” and we got 2” at my place in Graham..

My ranch is 7 ENE of Throckmorton and I’m seeing a bunch of pairs lately. Last Saturday morning I probably saw 10-12 pairs from 6am - 9am.

Glad to hear that. I hunt a place north of Throckmorton. The guy who owns the beer barn in Graham pumps north of Throckmorton and he said there is bird everywhere. I hope we keep getting the moisture. up

Been seeing chicks for the last three weeks in S. TX (Duval Co.). We were to the point where we were REALLY on the brink as far as rainfall was concerned when we received a 3-5" in rain across the ranch about 3 weeks ago. If we can get some more out of this tropical system coming in this weekend, that should put us over the hump. We usually get rain in late July/August so timing on these May/June rains is critical.

Shackelford Co. is looking pretty good right now from rains received last month but that country can turn in a hurry. No chicks yet, but they should be along any day now. I've been seeing lots of birds but I've been hunting that country long enough to know that you never know about bird populations out west until the season starts!! You can have birds through August only to find scarce numbers in Nov-Feb

At my place in Dickens county and conditions are fantastic. Lush and green with heavy insect population. Received in excess of 8"s of rain since 5/1/2018 Looks like rain was timely and should support a good reproduction of all our game animals.

this is what it takes for chicks survival, with continued showers to keep up the insect population

South fisher tank is dry but under growth and insects are still fair. Got a little rain last night and a chance for more the next few days. We need 2-3” quick to get some standing water.

Almost every bird is see is paired up, no chicks yet.

South of King Ranch:
Ground was almost bare--after 20 or more inches of rain in some places, tanks are full and guinea grass is often up to dog's shoulders.
Birds are finally pairing. It will be a late hatch but there will be birds.

Picked up some much needed rain last week in Big Lake. Birds were real active post rain. Should get a good hatch out of it.

Got a favorable report from Jones County last night, one of the places we hunt.
Owner says birds look good, maybe better than last year at this time.

We will be there on the 1st to dove hunt. We'll have a much better idea then about what's happening at his place.

Pretty bad around Midland and Odessa. We have gotten a little rain around, but all in all, not many birds. We went to our place between Big Lake and Rankin yesterday and only saw 4 coveys and not one baby. All the broom weed was dead as a hammer and not much ragweed except where the water had held in low spots.

Matador WMA posted their first count of the year. 0.6 birds/mile! 20% of last year! Sad frown

Hunt 'em if you got 'em! They may not be here next year!
