Been praying for rain on my place in Dickens county. Planted 2 acres of milo and 2 acres of beans in small 1/4 acre plots on 4/17. Looked like severe drought conditions were in our future as we only had around 1.3 inches of rain to that date this year. Hoping my weather app " Field View " is as accurate as I think because it now indicates that we have received a total of 9" since my plant date. Historical average is 8". What's even better the rain has been rather evenly spread over the 55 days from .5 to 1.5 inches at a time. Hope it's true because with such scarce rain at the beginning of the year we would have serious problems with reproduction of our quail and deer. So anxious to see the results in a couple weeks. Hoping my expectations are as good for all my fellow hunters as this is really good news.

I was up close to that area week before last, it was looking good. Best of luck.

Y'all have had really good rains recently. Good luck.

For Whitetails timing is key for rainfall.

Was there a week ago, it is lush and green. Mesquite trees are heavy with beans.

For Whitetails timing is key for rainfall. True. The thing I am worried about is the rainfall starting so late. The deer were in POOR shape prior to the rains and already starting antler development. It seems that, oftentimes, the deer put those newly available nutrients back into developing their bodies, and then put it into antlers. Years with poor winter/spring moisture often equal slightly below average development and BRITTLE antlers. I predict lots of busted beams early on this year. I hope that I am wrong. The quail (the ones who survived the LONG dry spell) are also getting a late start on nesting. Research shows that early broods have the highest survocal rate. Time will tell...

The 30 days post rut is the most critical time for rains IMO. There was an article written 20 yrs ago or so now that spoke to the importance of really good March rainfalls and how critical it was to a good year in South Texas for whitetails. The writer had data to back up his stance in the article. The more rains from post rut till Sept the better the year was.
