Results are out and I received a 2nd season unit 67 bull elk tag. I have never hunted 67 and am looking for some info as far as good roads to enter on or good areas to hunt. Obviously I will do my own research but it would be great if THF members have personal experience here. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Cool country, have a brother in Salida, not far from there. I haven't hunted that particular area but get there plenty early to scout and have your maps marked up and drawn on, understand the lay of the land before ever arriving if you can.

Check fire activity in the area. 416 fire is somewhere down that way, hopefully not in 67.
Good luck, great tag for you.

FYI, the 416 fire is not what I would consider close to GMU 67. That fire is on the border of GMU 74/75, maybe 10-15 miles north of Durango straight up 550 on the west side of the highway. Right next to the Silverton railway and the town of Tamaron.

Thanks Theringworm. Still better watch conditions, extreme drought in some parts of Colorado and we're getting pretty dry up here too.
Good luck on the elk hunt.

You’ll be looking to hunt off the stretch of rd that runs from Powderhorn (off 149) over to Old Agency (114). Huntsman Mesa generally has a lot of cattle staging around the pools and other hunters. One less hunted area that holds numbers is just above that Mason Family State Wildlife area. High concentration of sheep and what keeps them there also brings elk in and gives them an area to hang out. (Our group shot 4 one evening up there.) They tend to screw up and move around too much. Hug the mess out of private further East (closer to 114 after you cross the big culverts) and be glassing at daylight when they are on the move to get off public and same thing late evening when they start heading off private. The guy who owns all of that might host 2 elk hunters a year. Small creek to cross on foot that I haven’t seen a lot of ppl interested in doing. Odds are pretty good I’ll be there 2nd or 3rd this year.

Check forest conditions. Looks like Stage 3 restrictions have started, closing the forest to all activities. May be closed into fall if no rain.
