 Grass in food plot

My cousin and I made a food plot and now it being taken over with grass. Any tips for future plots...its a small half acre plot.

Same issue here. Some will say, 'use glyphosate', (Roundup) I prefer to plow and disc a few times and let the grasses burn up. Works OK but doesn't have that manicured look. Deer don't care.
Life is too short, as is. Don't chance it.

A month before you disk, spray round up good and thick. Two weeks later, spray anything that is still alive, or that sprouted. Lime, fertilize and then disk it all in. Then plant seed just before it's supposed to rain, and while waiting on the rain, spray more round up where needed. Some seeds will survive in the ground for almost a decade, so you have to keep spraying round up to kill everything.

Plowing, without prior Round-Up, promotes weed growth. The ultimate answer is do what farmers do, if you can. Herbicide the volunteer growth, plow, herbicide, new seed, cover it if you can (harrow, or shallow plow again), pray for rain.

I had a big patch of Johnson grass, bought me a 4 gallon back pack sprayer and sprayed with Round Up, it helped a lot. I need to do a few more treatments.

I cut, wait a week for new growth, spray, wait a week to die, disk, plant & fertilize. Has always worked well for me.

depending on what you planted, there are grass selective herbicides you can apply to the plot. I have used Clethodim this year on my plots and I have heard it takes a while for best results (2-3 weeks) but I did see some results after just one week on the sudan grass. The Bermuda that is in there hadn't shown any results yet after the one week but I will give it some time to work.
