Some of you on here know about my vizsla, Blue. He’s almost 6 and the best dog I’ve ever owned. Well, I failed Blue today. He and I were camping on the beach in matagorda and this morning he was having a blast swimming and catching crabs and chasing birds. And getting wet and sandy! So I needed to run into town and since he was dirty, I put him in the back of the truck. This dog is like my kid and almost always rides in the cab with me. But not today. As we’re driving into town, at about 45 mph, I look in my mirror just in time to see that he was standing on top of the ice chest. Less than a second after I see him up there, he slips and falls out of the truck. A 3/4 4x4. As I’m slowing down, I see him trying to chase after me and a leg is literally just flopping in all directions. It’s obviously very broken. His face is gashed and he’s bleeding slightly from multiple places. So I scoop him up and find a vet in bay city. After X-rays we learn that his femur is shattered and IF an orthopedic surgeon thought It was reparable I’d be looking at at least $3500. Not something I can do. So the vet sedated blue, gave me lots of meds, and sent me home. Monday I’ll be calling the local vet about an amputation I guess Any ideas on amputation cost?

One of my dogs was recently hit by a truck. Shattered his front right leg. The leg was just dangling. He had no feeling in his paw at all. Same situation as you except I was looking at $4500-5000. No way to tell if the nerve was damaged or severed. This was an orthopedic surgeon's opinion. The alternative was amputate $600. My vet said he could do it a little cheaper. We elected to leave the leg alone and let the bone calcify. That was about seven weeks ago. I noticed today that Luke was using his injured leg to fix his bed, so he has made some progress. Hopefully he will continue to regain more use. I'm glad I did not take his leg. It was a tough decision, but I think it has worked out better for him that I didn't. Good luck and hope the best for you and your pup.

Sorry to hear about your dog.
I had to learn the hard way too. I lost a Brittany a while back that I hauled around everywhere in the back of the truck with me. I took him and a buddies lab duck hunting one weekend. The last place I ever saw the Brittany was at the Truck stop in Cisco when I gassed up going back to San Angelo. I figure the lab knocked him out of the bed. I turned around and rove back to Cisco. Never saw the dog and no one ever called the number on his collar. This was before cell phones so I may have missed the call, but I figure someone got a free bird dog because of my carelessness.
I hope everyone reading this post learns from our mistake. I won’t haul a dog across the street anymore without a dog box. I keep my box locked until I get to where I’m going. If you don’t have a dog box then chain them to the Truck bed.

I dislike seeing dogs riding in the bed. Mine ride inside but I do have a doggie seat covering the leather.

Sorry to hear this. Keep him in shape afterwards and he will get around just fine.

I'm so sorry to hear cbumb. I hope you were able to save his leg, but if not, he will be ok and he will still hunt. I have hunted with Blue. Blue has heart and fire in him. Consider a Vizsla named "Bart" a few years ago. Ch RAZN The BAR CGC MH. Bart got his Master hunter start to finish on three legs only 10 months after amputation.

I spouted off above but forgot the most important thing. I’m truly sorry about Blue. I think he will be fine on a tripod and I bet he rides inside from now on.

I'm so sorry to hear that happened to Blue. Made me sick to my stomach when I read it.
Sniper is right, the dogs from that breeding have the heart, and desire to overcome obstacles.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

youre going to be suprised at how well he gets around on 3 legs. we never keep ours in a kennel anymore tho the concrete is just to hard on her since this and thats honestly the only difference ive seen. its natural to feel bad for them but you'll be amazed at the things he can still do.
