I agree the 5-600 target shooting will be more difficult than with a high BC bullet, but it can be done, which was my point in recommending it in the first place. An extra 100fps with the 140 AB makes up for some of it though I think. The "out to 200 yds" hunting range is where the AB shines.

No doubt.

In the last months I tried two bullets in my short (17") 7mm-08 A.I. the 162 ELD-X and the 150 ELD-X. 162 has an MV of 2640 fps, and the 150 has an MV of 2700 fps. That's about the speed they would come ouf of a 20" standard 7mm-08. I shot 100 rounds of each bullet in various wind speeds. The 150's got blown down wind worse than the 162's. I had to see if the 60 fps increase would cancel out the BC. My gut tells me, based on what I observed it did not.

YMMV

I'd run a cup and core in a 17" barrel. I never got the rapid expansion out of the accubonds as I have in c & c stuff. Not saying they are bad just that with velocity being lower anyway I'd run something that's more prone to opening up easier. Most c & c failures are due to high velocity impact on hard bone anyway.

I'll bet I've killed more whitetails with a 7mm-08 140gr. Sierra Game King than most of you have with all your calibers combined. Out to 400 yards. Have shot steel with that same bullet out to 600. Does it perform better than your 162s? I seriously doubt it at long range with the short barrels you guys seem to like. All mine wear 26" Hart Match stainless bbls. Used to kill ~ 75-100 year culling on some MLD ranches. Still kill at least 20/year on our place. Been shooting a 7mm-08 since 1992. How about y'all?

26", now that's a dual purpose tool, a rifle that could propel projectiles at high velocities if needed, and a pole for vaulting over fences when you don't want to risk ripping your new Scent-Lok squeezing through it

Only since 2000 for me. I get to cull whitetail does and aoudad, maybe not 100 per year, probably about 1/2 that. Started off with 140 partitions, which is never a bad choice. I've messed with the long/skinny .284 bullets. Here is a morning's worth of 120 BT work.

I've got a little over 10,000rds of 7mm-08ai down range. Mainly with 162-168 from a 20-22" krieger barrels. Got a new bartlien that's 25" and will be running it soon. I've played with the 120's and at 3200 they are bad mofo out to 400 for varmints even stretched them to 1k on a time or two but they get pushed around by the wind bad. Killed more pigs and yotes than deer with mine though but the 162-168gr stuff worked great for a do all so I just ran them as opposed to worry about seperate loads/zero and whatnot.

I was just bragging, dee. Though I do own 11 7mm-08s and shoot 1,000's of rounds per year. Since 1992 and still do today. I would imagine I'm closing in on 45,000 rounds and still going strong. Fun caliber to shoot and shoot it frequently in all types of weather. Not for match accuracy or anything like that although most of them will shoot sub .5 MOA at 100 and 200 yards, if I'm on my game. I like to shoot and I like to hunt. Don't like having to shoot an animal more than once, though I've had to a few times.

I've only been running mine for about 6yrs but they are easily one of my favorite do all calibers. I run mine in prs matches and do fair but it's a bit recoil handicapped. Right now I'm in a dilemma as if I want a light weight 7mm-08ai or 22creed (new favorite critter killer) to carry hunting. I think of all the critters I've popped with the 162 only 1 ran and he was dead before he jumped with completely liquefied lungs/heart and 3" exit. Pigs hardly go anywhere when hit in the ear so that's probably not a fair shake lol.

I have been running one or another 7mm-08 since 1982, though I have not had the chance to take as many game animals as some of you guys that little Remington 788 in 7mm-08 I started with has racked up over 100 one shot kills between myself and others with only 2 falling out of sight and it was the shooters fault not the cartridge or gun. Shots down the pipe on that one has to be pushing 2500. I also fell into acquiring various guns for a while and hunted deer if memory serves right 32 or so different cartridges which ate into the 7mm-08s field time and numbers.

That little excursion into trying numerous calibers has been both fun and enlightening IMO.

My path would be two fold. Where the road forks I would go both ways and go for the best of both worlds. For hunting at 200 yards it's gonna be point and shoot range. Either a 140 Accubond or Gameking, 139 Interlock, or 120 Ballistic tip. They will all kill like lightning at that range out of a 7-08, so I would go with the one that shoots best. For target shooting to 600, I would shoot something in the 160-162 class. I too have a lot of experience and time with a 7-08. I'm not looking to get in a pissing contest but I think a 139-140 on medium sized game and a 160-162 at the range best represent the 7-08's sweet spots in regard to the OP.
