What can you plant this late in the year for summer (if anything)

With the cool spring we had I just planted mine last week. Not to late, plant iron and clay peas. I planted a mix I got from local feed store. Peas and soybean mix mostly with some sunflower, sorgum and browntop millet.Put out with 150lbs acre 10-20-10 to give a boost. Got 9 acres in 2 plots and its up good but needs a drink of water. Rain a must to have decent forage. Also might suggest not planting a small plot in spring if you have high deer density. They will eat it as fast as it comes up and you just wasted your time.

Yeah soybeans want warmer soil to grow anyway, so if you have the means and the rain in the forecast, plant away.

I've tried it a few times, but don't anymore. You get great growth right away with spring rains, but with everything else growing, there really isn't anything there that brings in the deer. Then as soon as the heat hits, everything dies. Now I just spread lime in the Spring and some 13-13-13 fertilizer, and disk it all in and leave it until September.

Eddie you may want to drive over to my place one afternoon and see whats coming to the 4 acre plot about a hundred yards off my back pourch. Think you will change your mind. My wife and I kept them ran out night and day till it got up about 8 to 10 inches tall and we let them have it this week. Don't think the 4 acres is going to be enough.

If this a summer only food plot and won't be used for a fall plot then I would look at Sunn Hemp and/or mix of cowpeas(Red Rippers), Soybeans and LabLab depending on the size of it. Will cattle or livestock be able to get to the plot?

I hear sunflowers are good. Im prepping two spots (.5 are each) for some fall clover planting but I'm about to start throwing sunflower seeds everywhere else.
Also looking at fruit trees in a couple clearings not well suited for working plots.
