I just found out I will be moving to Lubbock to get my MA from Texas Tech. I’ve been reading about public hunting land in the area and found out about Lake Alan Henry. Does anyone have any experience hunting there or have advice for other hunting opportunities in the region?

It's a place to go, but the hunting isn't great. I wouldn't expect to shoot anything real big. Probably a better chance at a decent whitetail than a mule deer. Cheaper to apply and hunt if you live in Lubbock though, so that's good. Check with the city and see if they still do the day goose hunts east of town. If you get in the right spot and the birds cooperate, you can do pretty well. Most farmers up in that part of the world will still let you hunt birds for free if you just ask and are polite. Pheasants are 50/50, but ducks, geese, cranes, and dove are pretty easy to hunt for free if you do the scouting.

Get involved with the TTU DU chapter up there, that would be a good way learn about the area up there.

Congratulations on going to Tech, I think you will love it. Also, Muleshoe Wildlife Management Area is close to Lubbock and I understand offers decent hunting.

It is the oasis in the desert.

My wife and I hunted LAH several years ago. It was fun because we got to hunt some new country, but it wasn't so good that we have put in again. We bow hunted, to increase our draw odds, and drew on our first application.

It was set up into zones, and it was first come, first serve on the zones. You could roam the whole place during the day, but had to stay in your zone during hunting hours. I think there were two wheat fields in the northern zones - those zones went first. We were in a zone along the dam drainage and a zone in the SE part that had a wheat field with a weak stand of wheat.

It was hot when we hunted, so daytime activity was non-existent. Had a couple of opportunities at hogs along the river, but didn't shoot them as we were holding out for bucks. I could have shot a small 6 point in the SE zone, but passed. One buck was shot that we know of... a 9 point that was about 110-115, or so. The hunting manager acted like he was B&C, and couldn't believe that I had passed up the 6 point.

If you are trying for MD, try to get the farthest SW unit - on the south end of the dam.
