I would like to start by saying although I don’t own one I think the Creedmoor is an excellent round.

Is the Creedmoor so popular right now because Hornady is offering a never before seen level of factory support? If Remington would have stood behind the .260 the way Hornady is would the Creedmoor have ever been created? Or Lapuas 6.5x47? The 6.5x55 was a Target round for around a 100 years in competition shooting. Unfortunately it’s a long action and the world now wants short actions even though many of us are shooting the Tikka which only comes in long action with our fancy new short action round. Are we gaining anything with the Creedmoor other than factory support? For reloaders if all the components were the same price is there actually a superior cartridge on the list above? These are questions that I don’t actually have the knowledge to address but I am curious.

.260 will produce the exact same ballistics. It'll take a tad more powder, and can be a bit more finicky to get to shoot tight IME. I shot the barrel out of a .260, and it shot phenomenal pushing a 140 gr at 2800 fps MV. Brass will grow more, ES can be a tad larger due to the difference in case geometry. Ya gotta be a hand loader.

6.5 X 47 has extremely low ES/SD, but is more comfortable making less velocity than the other two. Small rifle primer means brass lasts beyond 10 firings. Ya gotta be a hand loader.

Hornady knocked it out of the park with case geometry, external ballistics, and ammo that is literally competitive, and is available.

My opinion is it’s the quality of ammo at relatively cheap prices for your average non reloader who in his or her mind wants to dabble in LR at some point.
So yes it was the Hornady marketing approach that shot it up to the top of sales chart.

I’m a 260 shooter, but would surely be just as happy with a 6.5CM. Nowadays it seems obvious that the 6.5 CM marketing and sales have left the 260 in the dust. I don't plan to switch calibers, so it doesn’t matter to me which cartridge ‘won’. If i was just hunting, i’d probably go back to my Sako 270, but for what I’ll call general use - paper punching and varmint shooting - the 260 and the 100 gr Nosler BTs are super accurate, nearly recoil free, and effective. And the grandkids of all sizes can shoot it and not worry about recoil. That would not be the case with my 270.

603, had a 6.5-308 built before Rem put their stamp on the A-Square round. That said, yes, light recoil. Plinking with 120s is a joy. Hard not to consider the Creed if one is getting into the 6.5s, but if one has a great shooting 260, and is a loader, no need to change. I have had Swedes first, then the 6.5-308 and subsequent 260s, both OEM and custom, a couple of Creeds, and a 47. All are very nice rounds for modest small bores, highly effective and efficient.

I was surprised at the recoil of some 100s I was shooting in the 270, but I was pushing them with a much higher charge of powder so it stands to reason. A bit overboard on bark and bite...on my end. Devastating on impact.

Yes, Hornady schooled Remington who has a knack for dropping the ball either in support, or getting the details right. Had Rem did 8 twist rifles, and supported with ammo on par with Hornady CM - quality and price, the CM might not have been the hit it is today. Remington is a Sales driven company all to appease bean counters and those who they deliver those #'s...investors. Hornady made a home run.....as they do the R&D and pay attention to details, and to shooters wants/needs.

Have a couple 6.5s on either side of the X55/47/260/Creedmoor and don't really think I will buy any of those any time soon. The Grendel, 6.5X54MS, 6.5-284 Norma and 24 Win Mag pretty much cover what I want to do with a 6.5mm spitting case.

Hornady has gotten much better with their R&D and developing of cartridges although they have flopped some themselves, mostly some that they did with other companies. 30TC made no sense is one example.

Remington seems to just throw a new cartridge out there and let it sink or swim on its own merits. It took the 7mm-08 years to become popular. the 6mm Remington with the correct twist rate at introduction and propper introduction would be much more popular.
