I was kicked of the football team in high school for going deer hunting with my neighbors for a week. I wasn't very good at it, and the team came in last place, so it wasn't a big deal for me to go to the game and then to the parties afterwards. Football was a pain in the butt anyway, so it was all good. I don't remember what classes I had, or if I had any assignments to do while I was gone, I barely remember High School, but I do remember that week out deer hunting!!!

On a lesser note. My Dad kept me home one day when I was in 5th or 6th grade to help build a doghouse. I learned a lot of practical knowledge that day that I can still use.
I used to pull my son out of class for Ranger day games a couple times a year. Never hurt his grades.

When I was younger, I never considered taking my oldest out of school to go out west to hunt. Now that I'm approaching 60 and my two youngest are 14 and 15. I'm rethinking that position. How many of you have done it. Regularly or just once. And what, if any, were the consequences. We would likely miss a week of school. Took my kids out for a weeks vacation almost every year when they were in school. Most school districts allow for this as long as you let them know up front. Only consequence is kids are only allowed to miss a certain number of days each semester and the 5 you take them out will count toward that total. We always requested that any assignments be sent home with them the week before so they would work on them.

If you home school, you don't have to think about it. There is a lot of time wasted with commuting and in between actively participating in educational activities in school. When you do the same things at home you cut your time by half or more.

A week of school is a long time to miss. Don't come down on them when their grades suffer as a result. If either kid is counting on grades for a scholarship, this may not be a good idea. If either kid is doing poorly in their classes, this may not be a good idea. Otherwise, it should be a great experience.

Do it and don't look back.
the only concern would be the school district, check with their rules concerning unexcused absences. Most places won't have a problem as long as they make up the work before or after. You have to remember kids are required by law to be in attendance a certain number of days.
