I have some .40 cal ammo that I would like to shoot. Any advice out there of a good .40 semi-auto pistol that is on the softer side (for a .40) recoil wise. I have fired a couple of them but both were pretty snappy. I realize they all, probably, have more kick than a 9.

Any full size metal frame gun should be pretty light. 40 in general is pretty snappy. Taurus PT100 is a light kicking gun. I'd bet a Sig P226 kicks reasonably.

My duty/off duty carry is a SW M&P 40. With the adjustable grip it is a pleasure to shoot.

Glock 22c

A heavier sig might be a little softer, my old 226 wasn't bad.

Taurus sucks

I love the "I have ammo so I need a gun" excuse. Wish that worked at my house. If that was the case, I'd go buy one of everything on Academy's shelf.

This is what I shoot. I never knew the .40 S&W was snappy until I read it on the internet. Now, my 3.5" 1911, that's snappy.

I really like my FNH FNX 40, it has added bonus being able to swap out with 357 Sig barrel

I have the M&P .40 compact and don't find it uncomfortable to shoot at all.

I don't think a 40 kicks bad at all in a full-sized gun. I've had a lot of 40s and the only one I thought was really snappy was the Kahr PM40 but it's still not as bad as a snub nose 357.

Anyhow, I recommend getting one of these: https://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?....40+AUTO+Pistol

That's a fairly high price for a police trade-in, but those suckers cost about $800 or so new. I doubt it will kick too bad.

I carry an EAA Witness compact alloy pistol either in .40 or 10mm. I do not consider the .40 recoil bad at all, the 10mm is moderate. But then I shot a 44 Mag Ruger Blackhawk with heavy bear loads (rifle loads) for years so my opinion may not be worth much......

My BiL recently brought his 40 cal Glock to do some shooting. I was surprised how well it shot, and recoil wasn’t bad at all.

If I were in your situation I would use it as an excuse to pick up a glock 40 MOS, it's 10mm, you are not supposed to shoot .40 out of a 10mm...

I do that all the time. With Glocks, I've never had a problem. I've been hesitant to do it with my Delta Elite because of the smaller extractor and reduces case support. Chances are, it would be ok too. With Glocks, the only issue I've had is a difference in the point of impact. The 40 S&W rounds tend to print higher on paper than the 10mm.
