Dad and I went turkey hunting last weekend but had a really difficult time on Saturday morning locating any gobblers. The wind was howling and the birds weren't moving. Not to mention, our place is limited on space so we really have to play it smart to pull birds from land around us since they don't roost directly on our property (from what we've seen).

Sunday was much nicer and the wind died down, but we still didn't hear a single gobble all morning. We gave up after an hour or two and came back to the house to sleep until lunch time. Around 11 am, dad walked to the back door with his box call just messing around and gave it a few yelps. I seriously thought he was pulling an April Fool's prank when he said to get dressed that he heard a gobble near our pond about 200 yards away.

I got dressed and walked outside and heard the gobble. He was hot. We walked down into the embankment of the pond where it's dry and I called once with my mouth call. He responded immediately and you could tell he was zeroing in on our location.

With no time to set up our hen decoy, we positioned ourselves against the bank and waited hoping to see where he would show up.

All of a sudden, we heard him gobble about 15 yards to the left and I positioned my 12 gauge to the left of my dad. Right then, I could see this jake's head pop and down above the bank, I got on him immediately and shot - dropping him in his tracks!

Pretty successful year so far on our little property!

Also, I smoked the breasts and thighs/legs last night and had some AMAZING turkey sandwiches for lunch today!
