The Navajo Nation sells two Non-Navajo Spring Bear permits annually and I was fortunate enough to draw one last year. Steve was the cameraman on the hunt as we videoed the hunt for CARNIVORE. Since Steve's first bear (ironically the last one taken with dogs in California) was small, I applied for Steve this spring. As luck would have it, we were again successful and Steve is really excited for the opportunity to kill one of the big black bear that the Navajo Nation is known for.
And yes, we will be hunting with hounds as bears have been hunted for hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Adios,
Gary

Thanks! While a fall bear is much heavier than one in the spring, they generally do not run as hard and as far. These big bear might be as much as 100 pounds lighter after hibernating all winter. When they come out of hibernation, they do a lot of grazing and you will find them in meadows as they are eating grass in in attempt to get their digestive systems working. Possibly the best thing about taking a bear in the spring is that the meat is usually very good as they have been eating only grass.
Adios,
Gary

Great to hear Steve got drawn for a Bear Tag. You taking your own dogs Cuz, or you tracking with local dogs. Since I'm retired now, I can carry extra ammo for Steve or muscle cream and a oxygen tank for you.

We will be hunting the bear with Calvin Redhouse's (Rez Hounds) as I don't let my run bear. Calvin shoots video for me and has some of my dogs or dogs out of my dogs. Caden Kothmann from Garden City got a tag as well and will be hunting with us. I will take my dogs in the event we cut a lion track as I have a tag. Your are right about the oxygen, Cuz. We will be hunting above 9,000 feet most of the time and the country can be pretty vertical.
Adios,
Gary

Excellent! Time to put the old man behind the camera and let Steve play a little.
