I've got a hankering for another lever gun and I was thinking about a Marlin 336 in 35 Remington. Not a new Remlin an older 336 JM stamped if I can find one reasonable.
I've never fired 35 Rem. so I have to depend on research and what I'm told by those who have.
I reload so ammo shouldn't be a problem.
Anyone here have any experience with this round? How'd you like it compared to say...a 30-30? How'd it perform on deer and hogs out to 150 yards? Exit wound?

I used one for about 10 years. Shot tons of deer using 200 gr Corelokts, which left a great blood trail every time. I used a fixed 4 power scope after I found how hard it was to use iron sights in dim light. I shot em in the lungs and they never went far. Ought to be good medicine on hogs.
I always said that max effective range was 150 yards, but shot a few at 250 or so.
Is it better than a 30-30? I always said it was, but Dad had a 30-30 and disagreed with me. Truth is that both calibers did a fine job, and I can’t really say with conviction that one is better than the other.
You may have a tough time finding brass for that 35.

6 one half dozen the other, some say the 35 punch's better, and the old adage its a "brush gun"

Love the 35 Remington. I’ve had many 30-30s come and go but the 35 is still around. It dispatches deer nicely at reasonable ranges. I prefer it to the 30-30 obviously. Is it better? The market didn’t think so.
Dies are readily available but brass is another story. Best bet is to buy factory ammo and shoot it. Then reload it. 3-5 boxes should be plenty (opinion) and dang near as cheap as brass if you can find it.

Great old round. I haven't hunted with one on years but like said above. Ranchdog will probably chime in he has some.
There is a lot to be said for big bullets moving fast enough but not crazy fast.

I prefer mine to my .30-30, but mostly because I like the bigger frontal area of the bullet for hogs. It’s a JM stamped Marlin 336.

I have a couple of 30-30s and have had others in the past. They're fun to shot but I wouldn't mount a scope and hunt with either of them. I like em the way they are.
I think I'll start my search for a 336 in 35 Rem. Thanks for your input.

I prefer it to the 30-30 obviously. Is it better? The market didn’t think so. Methinks that the market just liked the rifle (M94) which was only available in the 30-30.

Great old round. I haven't hunted with one on years but like said above. Ranchdog will probably chime in he has some. Haah! I guess I'm a broken record. I do own several rifles chambered in the 35 Rem; a bolt, lever, and pump, and it is a great cartridge for hunting the greater part of Texas. A one point several years ago, brass became tough to find, but that seems to be resolved. The SAAMI 33.5K PSI limit is a bit anemic, but in a Marlin, I'm good with 40.0K PSI. With my Rem 600, I shoot it like a 358 Win. The Remington 200-grain Core-Lokt is a standard, with a jacketed bullet, but my preference is the Speer 180-grain HCFP. I've always wanted to try the Sierra 200-grain PHRN, and I've used the Hornady #3515 InterLock. I use a 190-grain bullet of my design which NOE sells with either the standard lube grooves or with Micro-Bands for tumble lubing. I do think the 35 Rem is a good cast bullet rifle and there are plenty of different molds offered. If I was buying cast bullets, I probably go with the Montana Bullet Works RCBS 82028 sized to .359" and using the MBW treated alloy. My Marlin is a 336D which was a special run 336 Guide Gun. I have it setup with the XS Sights system, and it is a super hunting rifle. My ballistics with H335. Personally, I don't have a problem hunting with it out to 250-yards. Here are the terminal calculations. As far as the 30-30 Win vs. the 35 Rem debate, there is always the 35-30! With the strength of the Win M94 action, it offers a lot of possibilities.

When I hunted the Chap WMA, I used the Rem 600. All the hunters that saw it had never seen a 600 nor heard of the 35 Rem.

Good luck with your search. The good thing about Marlins in 35 Rem is that the buying pressure of the "JM" roll stamp really isn't there. Plenty of good deals on the auction sites. I've never seen a 35 Rem Marlin in a shop here in South Texas.
