So question which would be better for a chance at a gobbler early morning or afternoon??

I think if you can't get one off the roost, then 9:00 to 12:00 is the best time, but I wouldn't discount an after noon hunt either. If you can get a gobbler to respond in the afternoon, there's a good chance he'll come by to take a look.
Pay particular attention when you see birds, and the time you see them. They can be a creature of habit and can be at or near the same place at the same time each day... unmolested birds especially.
I've seen hunters give up and move too early many times. Lots of times, birds go one direction off the roost, only to reverse and come back a couple of hours later.

I think everyone's favorite way to kill a gobbler is to call it in right after it flies down. It doesn't work very well, though. I would guess I've killed nine later in the day for every one that came in on a string after flydown.
Whenever the bird is not with a hen is easier. Usually that is sometime between 10 in the morning and four in the afternoon. If turkey populations are low they might stay henned up all day.

I have done good around 9-10 in the mornings and around 5 in the afternoon. That is calling them in and not around a feeder.

I don't ever get up early (before 8). Works for me. I have killed one at every hour of the day up to about 2.5 hours before sunset. So 9 to 6 for me.

Of course the standard answer will be hunt as long and as often as you can, since they can show up at any time. But I'd say my best success has been between 9-11 AM and also 4-6 PM.
Have gotten countless Toms to gobble at first light, but as howl said, I haven't had luck getting them to actually come in that early. Makes sense though since they're roosting with real live hens who are right in front of them at fly-down.

I have had more success early and late morning but have killed them about every hour of daylight during season

The biggest toms I have gotten have been 11 am to 2 pm. They were without hens so very responsive. All the ones early and late are usually with hens.
