 What Am I Seeing?

I'm in the northeast Texas Panhandle, and as I'm driving through the countryside I'll see large groups of turkeys with a few gobblers puffed up around far more hens. I am seeing this mid to late afternoon/evening. Am I correct to assume the hens are not receptive yet? As far as I can tell, those gobblers are going to stay with the large group of hens even if it means spending the day with them with no breeding actually occurring. Thoughts? Recommendations?

Correct but not true on them staying with them. Hens will split up when hot to get bred and nesting. Gobblers are trying to get them interested right now. It is the best time to see big strutting Tom's though. Best time right now to run and gun and call. If you wait, it gets harder since gobblers will find a hen and stick with only her. We see hens needing bred all the way to end of season so hunt as much as possible early to call one in. Some days are good, some are slooooow.
